Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

Chris, Who would not give you the deference in view of the astonishing things you have built. But the truth is that not everyone has the same passion for learning and educating themselves and find fun in doing it the best they can. For a great number of people this is about fun with the least possi...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

Has anyone considered that "ugly" is a bigger sin in the SCA than non period materials? I am far more offended by the “SCA Goulash" approach to armour than I am it being plastic, stainless, or boagasite. In fact, if you spent your time trying to get rid of plastic armour, I would say ...

Re: Wanted: Helmet visor and falling buff

I have had similar issues, but I made a gorget that came high on my throat and my grill (on the above helmet) comes under my chin. Plates sticking down on the visor will not offer much protection when you raise your head as they will lift out away from the chest and any sliding shot will pass right ...

Re: Wanted: Helmet visor and falling buff

No, I didn't say it was a bad idea. I was just pointing out, that if you were concerned with a period helmet, this style is 17th C. Although, I thought you wanted to change the appearance of the helmet, making it more period looking. I am not clear on how, adding the elements you mentioned, are goin...

Re: Wanted: Helmet visor and falling buff

Well truthfully this style of helmet isn't period for the sca. This is one reason I dropped my original persona. As for faceplate options, the Polish had full "sheet" metal faceplates. But again I believe all of those are 17th C.

Re: Wanted: Helmet visor and falling buff

That is very nice, but a buff is throat and chin protection. Also, the quality of the planishing on that helm vs your modern stuff is obvious. I'm glad I took the extra step of looking at the other stuff your site. Having such a nice helm for so many years has made me a bit spoiled. Well, no, actua...

Re: Wanted: Helmet visor and falling buff

Here is something I did that worked very well and I fought in this helm for many years. This Lobster Tail helmet I made in 1984. It features an articulated spring steel tail and cheeks. The grill is held in by the nasal key/ wing screw above the umbrell. I made the "wing" of the screw, piv...

Here is what I have in the shop: m If you want to slow it down more, just change a pulley. I have a 14" (Enco, made in Taiwan) as well, but I've read that it is best to switch a DC motor into it for metal cutting (treadmill motor and speed control). Are you using the standard AC motor? Have yo...

Re: should I buy a beverly B2 or B3

Frederich, Yes, I agree the shear is quieter. There are times when someone else is cutting; I would like them to move to ... another state. But I prefer the ability to make square inside corners and more precise cuts. I would have spent much more time making the hinges I did recently, if I had to cu...

Re: Blackening black and white armour? Linseed oil?

The original pieces I have looked at closely appear to be painted. The big difference of course, modern spray paint on milled mild steel, isn't going to perform as well as an oil based thicker paint on wrought steel. The B&W suit I have is painted (because of time) in the first way, I have plann...
