Ok, so I was cleaning my workbench out in the shop and found this. m It's laser cut from 16g stainless steel. The little bits of black stuff you see, are leftovers from the adhesive. You can use neatsfoot oil. I've used it in the past. Normally, I'll apply it, let it soak in and then wipe off. I'll normally let it sit wrapped in towels to absorb some of the extra oil so that it doesn't rub off. Wax will make a sheath stiffer. I'll use a double boiler type setup and a wax/oil mix...

I can change the hole layout quite easily, but I can't cut bronze (or brass or copper) due to the nature of the materials and a co2 cutting laser.

The laser actually produces a wonderfully clean cut. In fact, I've done some work for a local waterjet place because their edge finish was too rough and needed to be cleaner.

It can, however, do brass, bronze, and copper where I can't.

Yes! I do a run a laser that is computer controlled. I can help with the stainless, but not the brass (nature of the beast with brass and co2 lasers). Shoot me email or pm with more information and I'll get back to you.

Seamless is definately better, though as pointed out, both will wear out eventually. What alloy are you looking at? Regular 304 won't last very long. 316L is the most common alloy used in salt pots. But if you think that 304 tubing is expensive.....

When cutting anything with a laser, it's a melted edge. A clean melted edge, but melted none the less. I guess I'm not clear what what you're meaning.

There are no dies in laser cutting. A program is generated from a drawing and the machine does it's thing. If you're looking for brass, it can't be cut on CO2 laser. While molten, brass is too reflective in the infrared spectrum and could destroy this type of laser. A YAG laser though, could cut it....
