Hey Freiman, Thanks for the input! Savaric and I both tend to be cautious snipers, so when we fight each other you see a lot of what you see on the tape. Later, I changed up quite a lot and started throwing deep earth wraps to the inside thigh, face thrusts, more movement etc. We reularily have 10-2...

The shield manipulation thing is something I know I need to do, I find it hard with the curve on my heater to scoop and hook or even press (it slides instead of pushing). Having said that I still need to make a conscious effort to incorporate into my fighting. Thanks! Try with a larger traversing s...

Ewan, please receive my $0.21 pesos. 1) On your fight with Sir Ieun both of you got legged. He reacted offensively when legged (IMHO he practically sprang at you and started whacking away, I can't say if thats legal or honourable, but he did) yet when you got legged you just let yourself fall to yo...

Good points Allen. I have been making a conscious effort to re-introduce thrusting into my game and did a couple of kills with face thrusts that night. The shield manipulation thing is something I know I need to do, I find it hard with the curve on my heater to scoop and hook or even press (it slide...

m Small local practice/tourney. Had a great helper take some pics and videos. The guy in the phyrgian beat me twice with the same shot. He waited until I threw, I dropped my shield and then he slot shotted me. I corrected for our bouts later, but he had me in tourney. Any input would be very welcome...

First, while you have the leather off, tape your foam (next time roll about 1" of the blue stuff up, instead of cutting discs...way easier) to the top of the sword with strapping tape ran in the same fashion as your current leather strips (only more!) Find some seat belt material or the blue plastic...

Wouldn't it be fair to state that each fighter has thier own definition of "excessive"? If they haven't accepted your blows doesn't that mean that your definition of excessive isn't the same as thiers? Yes, that could be true. It could also be true that their definition of excessive might lead to i...

Personally, I won't escalate the power of my blows beyond what I think is safe, regardless of whether or not my opponent decides to accept them. I've dropped enough heavies to know I could knock someone's block off with a spear shot to the face, or leave them gasping for air, but the rules are clea...

hmmmm Shane I will concede that, based on your dictionary defintion of "martial art", SCA combat does not meet those definitions. Having said that, my experiences with eastern martial arts bear much similarity to my experiences with SCA combat. ie: "This is how to throw a flat snap" "Good" "Now do t...

At Daffodil tourney this past weekend Sigurd went to the finals, defeating HG Duke Davin in semi finals only to lose to HRH Sir Ulf Bloodfoot in the finals. m Also Savaric did very well, his only losses being to the two finalists: m I would add that Sigurd had one victory against HRH Ulf and in the ...

I believe that SCA combat and WMA are not complimentary of one another whatsoever. The SCA combat I have seen involved armoured men fighting as if they were unarmoured, men kneeling on their knee's as they hid behind shields and a very real exhibition of folks that were willing to take a hit to giv...

Okay, I still haven't got to the library but I did manage to get my hands on some wild Canada goose feathers. When we build them we use a piece of seatbelt or a piece of blue pump discharge hose around the top two inches or so of the sword and build our discs so that they are far enough above that material to still provide adequate compression. This style of construction seems to last waaaaayyyyyy longer th...

Okay, I went out and got some supplies today.
Now I can't wait to try and make a mess. Before I get my books from the library would these examples work to start with for simple gothic and carolingian?

Thanks for all the tips folks! To answer a few questions etc. 1) 1345-1360 Central Scotland is the time and place for me. 2) I'm just a simple(ton?) squire whose main love is fighting. 14th C calligraphy & illumination - Where/how to start?
Title pretty much says it all.
I am green as grass when it comes to this but think I should know how to do basic calligraphy at least and would like to extend this to illumination as well.
