Dark Ages Leather Dyes (and other treatments).
So, any evidence about this subject? Preferably written academic-ish resources, but I'm willing to go with circumstantial/theoretical evidence as well. This is for an SCA A&S project.
Thanks!

Sir Theo, I might end up ordering a pair of those up around summerish, do you think you could do greaves in the same style? Come by the Bastaermark at GW and have a beer (or mead)! There are several fighters in the group who would like to check your stuff out as well (my soon-to-be knight actually s...

Bronze/Brass Punch tools and supplies, where to buy?
I'm looking to start doing punchwork and such (making belt fittings, brooches and stuff) with bronze and brass and I'm looking for suppliers of tools and materials (small sheets and rods). Hobbytown has brass, but I'm not sure if that's appropriate for Dark Ages Germanic/Viking stuff, so if anyone c...

Nice kit! Hopefully we'll meet each other on the field at GW. Come by the Early Period Camp sometime during the week. I'll try to get a pic up of my Earlyish-Germanic kit, which is earily reminiscient of yours (Richard helm, black maile). Healfdene PS SirTheo, who sells the AL lamellar on here also ...

I'll be there. Camping in the Bastaermark. The thing I'm most excited about is recieving my red belt from Sir Dragolen, war chief of the Basternae. I also can't wait to show of my incredibly awesome new armour: black riveted chain, leather lamellar, and Sir Richard helm. I'll be one of the best look...

I think that the last time I was in the Wallace Collection I saw what was an onion-toppish bascinet with a barbute face (I think with a flattish lifting visor). Unfortunately, photos aren't allowed there and as far as I know there are no published pictures of this particular helmet. Hopefully y memo...

Looking good! My only critique of your existing harness is that you seem to be suffering from floppy knee syndrome. You might want to try putting a strap behind the center of the cop. Find some good pics of realistic effigies and try to emulate the way the armour on them is strapped. If I was going ...

Yeah, what Gordon and Karen said; if you do 14thC, at least read "A Distant Mirror." If you do Viking, at least read "A Concise History of the Vikings." One time I tried to teach a class called "Authenticity is Fun and Easy" focusing on the "Viking" period. The only people who seemed to "get it" wer...

I've never, ever had a single problem with this helmet. Never had a marshall even look sideways at it. I have never experienced a blow to the head (and I've got some hard ones at wars) that made e feel in any way unsafe in it. Two other people in my shire own the same model (one is a slat back) and ...

"OOOOOOOOOOOOODIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNN!!!!" Seriously though, calling out to any of the war gods (Odin, Thor, Tyr) to watch your deeds/watch your ass in battle seems very sensible. In a very viking-y way... FYI: Old English "Ut!" means "Out!" and really only makes sense as a battle cry if you happen...

Bandyball? I think that's the name of it. During the 100 Years War, English kings outlawed this sport because men were playing it instead of practicing with the longbow. Sorry, I don't have any documentation handy, this is just from memory. It's somewhere to start if I'm not completely wrong though.

Miyamoto Musashi Biography
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/477002 ... 56?ie=UTF8
Supposedly, this is the first English-language biography of Miyamoto Musashi.
I'm not really into Japanese stuff, but I read some of this at the store and it was pretty well-written. I'll probably pick it up eventually, just because the guy was such a badass.

Here's a couple of pics of my RQP fixins. I can't see any possible way you could damage them with rattan. When Sir Richard put the eyebrows on, he said something about them being flat and having to shape them, bnut I'm not 100% on that. I'm very happy with the quality. [img]http://i48.photobucket.co...

Fourfold Germanic Warrior Ethic/Code?
The Fourfold Germanic Warrior Ethic/Code was set ou by a literary critic many years ago. I learned bout it in y Old English class. However, I've lost the reference. Somebosy help me!
