I'm just starting out right now and I only deal with leather. A dishing form was in need when I was working on my greaves and bauzibans. I ended using my friends wooden bowls that they really didn't care about and I ended in splitting the bowl in half after the work was nearly done.

I did a duct tape dummy of my arm to make bazibands. It only required an old T-shirt and duct tape. Just be care full when cutting. Yes, these scales can be difficult to work with. I carved a few of these myself once and did it looked ugly and difficult to work with since the cuts weren't exact but it does work.
