I think many kings in England spoke English before the 14th century as a main language, likely much earlier. Matthew Paris makes a comment about Henry III regarding his use of English but I could not find it after a quick look. I think by the 13th century everyone spoke English. There is a differen...

Gatorade is definitely mixed too strongly so it either needs to be watered down or drunk with water. One trick our water bearers used for Sunday summer fighter practices was to mix gatoraid with about twice as much water as it instructs. Basically if you could stand to drink it you needed to drink i...

I tend to be a big fan of getting to the details of past societies myself, Glen, but I'm not always sure if all the details even fit together. More importantly, I'm never sure if all the details are still exists. History gets lost, forgotten, or misconstrued. How, then, can you synthesize a larger ...

Sorry, I am not dissing Hanwei, but I believe we have a more discriminating audience here. Bud Light is not undrinkable, but to mention it in a homebrewer's meeting will raise some eyebrows.... I kinda like that analogy except that we aren't a homebrewer's meeting. Perhaps a beer drinkers guild, so...

Most I've not looked at since buying them. So I am going to Auction them off in groups. Auction ends Thursday at 7pm CST. The P after the a...

First thing is talk to you wife if you haven't. Get a feel for what she thinks about it. And honestly ask her even if you know she will say no. If the tourney will be close enough day trip it if you can convince her. Always start there, not so much to try and get her into the SCA but to remind her t...

It's interesting, though, that so many of the contributions seem to be entirely literary in nature. You can't neglect the literary aspect in history, of course, but I wonder whether the choice of subjects reflect medievalism in the US adequately? No it doesn't she almost completely ignores the hist...

It's why I switched to history. Depending on the department that might not help much anymore. I was lucky and our department was relatively conservative in regards to historical practice. We did have one South Americanist who liked theory a lot. Luckily I never took any classes with her. Theory in ...

Agreed but some of it looks like it might be india crap made in heavier gauges, which is one of the reasons why some india stuff has been ignored by people who actually use armour.

Another potential factor is that over the last few years the production line armourers have improved quality and look without drastic price increases so instead of looking to buy something here people may just be going straight to them. Also one of the things that happens as disposable income goes d...

Waste studies is a brand new academic discipline invented by Susan Signe Morrison, a dark-haired, extroverted 49-year-old professor of English at Texas State University's San Marcos campus. The only upside to it usually is that pickle buckets were free. And sorry but $725 is insanely high for plastic That pretty much sums it up. There are advantages to plastic armour like you can stick it in your shed for a decade and pull it out and still wear it. But expensive plastic just isn't wor...

I know what a true sallet looks like, but unless you have the lower section (bevor I believe) it is no where near legal for SCA combat. I only made this helmet due to the overwhelming popularity at one time and the numerous daily emails I was getting for this style. I bought the proto-type from the...
