The Vikings as a whole rarely did squat for anyone in North America. It was a small core group of folks within the Vike that always supported VNA. It isn't a belief that they gave yall any support it is the idea of having something to build around and in particular combat at Hastings. Problem with ...

Firstly it is way to early to see the numbers as anything other then those who get to play on the internet all day long. Let’s see. 9 years ago I had roughly 7000 people at Estrella when I was king. This last year we had somewhere around 4200 last I saw which is devastating! There are some threads...

The issue isn't really whether or not a properly functioning shafted arrow is safe or not (because those probably are), but rather how UNSAFE the defective ones are and how damaging they might be that is the issue at hand, because even defective siloflex is relatively safe to an armored combattant....

Re: SCA combat archery safety Poll

There are creditable reports (one of which I conducted a first hand interview) of deflections causing serious rib injuries. From just Fellwalkers or other blunts as well? Generally by the society rules shafted arrows are only allowed from light bows and siloflex from heavy. Apparently Fellwalkers a...

That is intentional. If you really believe that then don't partake in melees with archery. The rules specifically give you that option.

Some people don't mind it and even enjoy the added tension of dodging arrows as you do but could you honestly say that you would have less fun if you were involved in a spear duel on the front line and you weren't pegged by an arrow? I just don't think you would miss it all that much. Your fighting...

In later period England at least, night soil was considered a valuable commodity. It was collected by men called "gong collectors" and was sold to farmers as fertilizer. We've since learned that human feces is not safe for that, but at the time they used it quite prevalently. This came up...

You kick out the archers. The SCA is about inclusiveness, but it is also about sharing. Just to clarify since you gave me a period instead of an ellipsis that I agree the SCA seeks to be everything to everyone who does pre-17th century whatever it is you want to call what people do. Gun there is so...

Do you hold a Melee field the same as a List? It doesn't matter; the rule regarding chivalrous conduct does not differentiate. But Chivalry does differentiate. That which is chivalrous in a joust of peace is much different then that which is chivalrous fighting against non-Christians which is diffe...

I'm not a wood expert but I'm going to guess it would take a whole lot of lazy sword hits to break and ash spear shaft. Same is true of shields. You may maul the edge of it or get something stuck in it but they take a licking as well.

Always google books these days. Many books are previewed some with large portions. And as a general rule Oxford press books that have not been reprinted after their original printing cost a lot, I wish they would reprint more as some of their books are seminal studies.

Moving to an 'armor as worn' standard for archery alone plays against this existing sensibility. It would be more in keeping if we simply adopted a similar "standard" like face-only -- arbitrary and imperfect, yes; but extremely playable in its simplicity without penalty for being a novic...

Have you ever been an authorized fighter in the SCA?
Have you ever fought in an SCA melee?
Have you ever been to Europe to see archery in use?
Have you ever taken part in a re-enactment or tactical put together by one of the major medieval re-enactment groups?

Thus, it would se...
