Cotton is crap, just stay away from it. Linen is really absorbent and unlike cotton linen will not cling to your body from just a little wetness like cotton will. I wear two layers of linen and two layers of wool on my upper body at most events and it has to get pretty warm before I get warm. Am I c...

Upper class shields in NW Europe in the latter Middle Ages tend to be cavalry shields. So the answer is pretty much a no. There is a border illumination from some French or English manuscript in the period around 1300 that has basically a guy fencing with a center grip heater with a round bottom. I'...

Illusion is hard to beat in the quality/price ratio. There are also indications that they are getting back on track after several years of real problems which is pretty unheard of in the armoring world. Two things. At some point once you had towards the end of the SCA's period heraldry starts looking crowded sometimes because you more or less couldn't conflict within your country. The other thing is that scale is important. Finding the right size for the elements in your heraldry is just one of tho...

Sorry I should have checked my sources. "Always no no Never Forget to check your references" I went looking and am amazed at how rare per pall is in medieval heraldry. So then instead of what I said before you would basically just remove the center diamond and the two diamonds would balanc...

One question you need to ask yourself is do you want heraldry that looks medieval or just heraldry that will pass. For example the per pall inverted is not very common because it is hard to balance it, especially if you use a metal instead of 3 color. A more medieval way to take the elements you use...

Well you do realize that there is a precedent for it. Most people don't know this but at Agincourt before the battle both choirs went out and had a singing contest and that is why the English army was given such a prime location which lead to them winning the battle. They were going to have a cookin...

Imagine the hugest air dick stroking motion ever in the universe. Who cares about the frikkin' war point? What is an "air dick motion"? And don't ask me why but people care, some people care a whole lot. Look at the elaborate systems they have created for it. Obscure grading schemes and a...

But with that system how do you determine who won the title or the war point or what not. Its like the single elimination tournament. Trying to put forth some new ideal as the way things should be done seems to be mostly a waste of energy in regards to the SCA. You might change some details but you ...

It would be stupid to argue contrafactuals with you, Brent. And it would be useful for a Laurel to say "This is the sort of work that I as a Laurel would be proud to see from a fellow Laurel." One of the reasons folks in the SCA enter A&S competitions is to earn the chops and get feed...

As for A&S Competitions, these always strike me as a little arcane. Wouldn't it be better to simply judge the work as worthy of the region's A&S AoA-level award, GoA-level award, or Laurel-level, with the proviso that you could not judge it as worthy of a level higher than you yourself had ...

Looks bunched a little but you should definitely seek the same body profile. Even with your breastplate underneath your cote you should be able to put a belt on right bellow your breastplate right around your belly button and give you some hourglass shape.

Re: appearance

Firstly I'd like to say that the idea of taking off points for the material is not how the judging is being done. The accuracy of the material is scored 1-10. It needs to be remembered that those are the rules I would not knock an entry because it is made of stainless any more than I would knock a p...

I would never ever mark someone off for using 410 instead of mild steel as mild steel is n equally poor approximation of period material. I don't think I would go that far. 10 series steels are closer and I have little doubt you could find steels that would average out to .08% carbon which is about...

He almost certainly wouldn't have had a writing table. To be lugging that around you'd likely be lugging a clerk to write on it. A slope is an idea cause he might not have had it but it fits what you want. He'd probably be more likely to have a small trestle table or some such and just write on that.
