legalities aside you should consider padding it with a 1/4" cotton padding quilted into some linnen then stiched on. I thought there was a thread that showed a bunch of peoples standards but I can't find it now but most I've seen done by people they atleast line them in fabric if not pad them. ...

I didn't read this but I'd recomend a brigandine, you can get 23ish ga 1-1/4 spring steel banding/strapping for a reasonable price. You will get lots of answers and lots of linnen but something to think about is that wool has far more ability to absorb impact in fewer layers then linnen.

There is an article on the influence of romanances on medieval tournaments. There was also a treatise written in the 15th century which is something along the lines of how tournaments were held in the days of King Arthur. and I might be able to find them where? I believe both are avalible on jstor....

The other image I believe is in a manuscript in the BNF or atleast one by the same artist. It has an amazing variety of helmets and I think is 1430s or 1440s French.

I was thinking a screw inside a box with a lock on it screwed into the pole. While box locks I would imagine are not super hard to pick or difficult to get keys for commercially made ones with the screw inside the box someone would still have to access the box first.
