Duke Tiernan in An-Tir is about 6 foot and 200 lbs or so.

Re: Shamshir and other curved blades for SCA heavy?
Care to share this knowledge? Actually, that's it for the knowledge. As shown to me by Sir Daegar Fairhair ( A viking who now uses a naginata!) Shave the rattan to what dimensions you like. Carve handle to taste. Get some sort of peg board made up (Daegar uses a couple of cheap screwdrivers and a 1...

Shamshir and other curved blades for SCA heavy?
I have been considering making a curved blade for SCA heavy fighting. I do a Mongolian persona and from what I have seen, a long, curved blade was commonly used. Something like this: http://www.newmastersgallery.com/artistst/TsengNew2007OOO0--Mongolina%20Warrior%20Practice%20with%20Sword-20x18.jpg W...

My wife's helm is courtesy of Two Ravens. It looks awesome and protects her like a tank. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5088/5235903667_0de59ffe45.jpg The camail is from IceFalcon. The horsetail was included with the helm. Amazingly he was able to match my wife's hair color without ever seeing a pic...

Re: Protect My Thighs and a few other Questions
Me personally - if you were to tell me that you have messed up knees and take legs as a yeilding blow, I would not be offended at all. In fact I would consciously avoid hitting your legs as a courtesy. I do agree with the sentiment that if you keep the focus that your knees are messed up as why you ...

Re: Edit: bought HF shear, initial review
I got the HF shear about a year ago. I used it to cut street sign aluminum, 20g stainless and 18g brass. So far no issues. I have found that when adjusting the gap screws I need to back them most of the way out, push the lower blade as far over as it will go, then screw the adjustments back in until...

Re: Ebonwoulfe Cuphilt Review
My wife and I got a pair of aluminum cup hilts this last Christmas. They are light and sturdy and balance the rattan out nicely, making for a fast, maneuverable sword. There are 2 issues: 1 - The seam on the inside rubs against the knuckle of my index finger. Both my wife and I experienced this. Tap...

This tends to start after they have been in armour for a few weeks - mistaking power for speed. It starts with being hit at full speed a few times - they know it hits hard and fast. Unfortunately they wind up swinging for the fences thinking that more power into the shot will make it go faster. Inst...

very nice how thick is the brass? Thanks for the comments. The brass is about the equivalent of 20g steel. I have trained some women fighters, including my own wife. I have found these tips the most useful no matter who I am training. 1) Be Honest - I can't emphasize this enough. If it feels weird, hurts or is uncomfortable, the student HAS to tell the trainer. The trainer is then obligated to find out w...

I did some practicing with a local war band and they used the crash barrel lids for the shield wall. They were great while practicing, but when we started crashing lines and hitting each other, the lids broke rather handily with nice sharp splinters. I think you mentioned you saw Tuchucx using the s...

Broken drum - that sucks. If it's just cracked you may want to consider either epoxy or superglue to fill that in. If it's shattered, then that royally sucks. Each of my drums and I have a personal relationship. As does my wife and her multitude of stringed instruments. Here are a few places to go t...

Problem with that is that you run into this scenario: 1 beats 2 2 beats 3 3 beats 1 Who moves on? The answer is that the loser of each fight stays, and if you lose two in a row, your out. That would then lead to the question of what happen if that takes 15 fights or so? The people in that scenario ...

The leather band on my wife's helm is exposed. It's dyed about the same color black as the band just above it. As such it does not seem to stand out much. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5048/5235901129_77a99720f7.jpg Now on a shiny stainless helm, I could see it standing out a lot more than it does....

I have been running some sample tourney brackets, and it's possible to run an elimination tournament without doing bye fights. Depending on the number, there will be one or more groups of 3 that need to fight it out to decide a winner (or two). A fast round-robin will determine who advances. (1 vs 2...

I am about 1/2 way through my 40th year. I started SCA heavy when I was 36. Before that I fought Amtgard and started when I was 30. I have been improving some, and will be re-working my own kit for better mobility. For other examples here locally - Duke Tiernan won his second crown at 42. I think hi...

It's 6' tall. Right about 20lbs. Works great for slow work and is heavy enough to put some stank on my shots. I made these as a donation for a tournament prize at a canton down the road. The Senechal and other members are good friends, and they have a lot of new fighters who don't have the means to buy themselves armour. So I got talked into making these. I figured I would post some pics here to share. They...

When I first started fighting heavy SCA, I was fresh from a lot of years fighting Amtgard -where head shots are illegal, but shoulders were always fair game. At a fighter practice, I went up against Sir Daegar who likes to rest his shield on his knee cop and hold his sword straight up and down. To m...
