Well, Sean does have a point. Erg. as a abbreviation for 'erganzt' (restored) can be pretty important in a German auction catalog!

Hmmm... seems to me that I should have made it clear that this is not a hardback book. I don't know that there is such a thing, for this volume. All I cared about was the pictures. You know what I mean.

Yes, that's correct. Names, dates, and places are easy enough to decipher, though. My own Deutsch is nicht sehr gut, but I leaned enough to handle the basics. Here's another picture, the first I ever saw in the book back in the library at the Tower in '93.

Psst.... Don't tell anybody, but centered haute guards never existed! They are primarily a frontal defense, though they also do a pretty good job from the side.

Sorry about that, Nickenor. Now I begin to grasp how big it is. If he'd made it to fit himself, you'd have been fine. A suggestion; it'd make a nifty planetarium. Ought to seat a good - sized crowd. P.S. The skull of the helmet of the famous 'Sigismund' gothic harness is 10.5" back to front and...

To answer the last part of your question, bascinets were still in use by both sides. Sallets would have been pretty much confined to use by the French and possibly the Burgundians, but I've seen no evidence yet that the English used them that early.

I see that in the pictures it is being worn over an inch too low. Adjust the suspension so that your eye is in the middle of the occularia (eye holes), and it will work better for you, even if it is a bit on the large size.

Cheers,

James

Flickr.com is one of the best sites for large format photos, but there may be some membership charge involved. I'd become a member of the Arms and Armour Forum, and put them there.
