And a couple more. Shots from slightly different angles help one to get a better idea of the three dimensional form, especially if you can make them work in a stereo viewer.

Re: Another mail project: "Braies d'acier" or breyettes

Such a brayette wouldn't do much good in mounted combat. It would be a lot better than a skirt for foot combat, though. I am inclined to see the two forms in that light, particularly based on the testimony of mounted clients of mine that would not have mail between them and the saddle, but then, the...

Alterative to helmet skull raising

The last couple of months have been pretty busy. Here, I was at Castle Breitenbach giving a demo to the Capital District Blacksmith's Association. I finally had more than one striker at my disposal, so I could get a better idea of how long it would take for a small shop without a big water powered h...

Re: German 'gothic' gauntlet of extreme form

This beast was inspired by E 88 -89 Madrid, and is blended with the A 58's in KMW. The gads on the Madrid pair are renowned for being snow capped year 'round. The effigy of the 'Black Prince' seems to show that there was a vogue for knuckle gads among the English in the late 14th c. (Mr. Capwe...

German 'gothic' gauntlet of extreme form

This thing was what I decided to focus on when it came to something new for my show. It is not really finished, but for the purposes of the show I could at least display it. The knuckles were nuts to do; steel just does not want to assume that position! It was made for someone with a short, thick ha...

Heavy cav is what I'd be thinking, too. Did legionaries wear much scale in the 1st century? For some reason, I always associate it with cavalry.

Re: Roman scale gauntlets

Alright, I scaled the photo so that the longest scales, on my monitor, are 28mm. Hopefully it will read that way on everyone else's. I don't think it's all that big, particularly not for a large hand and some padding on the back of the hand to handle impact, then laid out flat. glovePicture556.jpgsc...

Re: Check out the micro-mail

I measured a number of the rings, most across the part of the rings without the rivet. It is complicated by the fact that they are usually a bit oblate in shape, not truly round, though I chose rings that were more round than others. These measurements are from the body of the piece, given in inches...

Re: Burgindian "Close Helmet" ???

I have seen that augmented bib thing before, and wondered what the bevor came from. Original tales on 'Maximilian' close-helms are very rare for some inexplicable reason, and if this one had an original tail, that would be something. It is not unusual for helms to be made of parts that did not belon...

Width at the widest point of the cuffs, 104 mm right, 98 mm left. The gauntlets were pulled out so that the rivets were at the ends of the slots, but all the...

It would be nice to see a good high res photo of the inside of the skull and a good shot from the rear. Re: Late 15th century German gauntlet articulation

The gauntlets of the famous 'Sigismund gothic' harness in Vienna (A 62) are so tight that the lower cannons are over an inch shorter than what would be usual for lower cannons, and the ulna spike has a very broad, stepped base compared to what one would see in the vestigial examples. It is not, of c...

IMG_4743.crp.JPG I have to say I'm not buying the whole 'thin helmet liner' notion. There has been no scientific examination of them that would provide data on how thick they were four hundred years ago or more. The last liner I had in a helmet I worked on was 17th c., and a bit ragged in places, b...

The French battle plan for Agincourt was discovered awhile back. It is very well thought out, and if it had been followed, things would have been very different. Look in Agincourt 1415 by Matthew Bennet, pp. 62-66.

What is the weight of the shirt? Its overall form is very North African, and the repair rings are dead ringers for several shirts out of Africa that I have worked on.
