Here's the thing that I don't understand about this thread. Freiman posts some stuff. Then casually posts a picture of an attractive girl with blond hair and a pretty smile who is a top notch chef and event administrator who happens to be an expert marksman with an M-16 and is an opera singer and is...

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Clermont, can't dish the lames to match the cops because the cops are hot raised. I could approximate it though. I'll probably do that next time. Edge on the demigreave was done by first hammering from the inside into a wood block with a notch cut into it with a r...

Louis, what size rivets are you using on the articulation? I ask because it looks like they are 3/16", and honestly, with that many rivets, using 1/8" will drop you several more ounces in weight, and they will still be more than durable enough, and they will (IMO) look more proportional. ...

Looks very nice. What are you planning for your next spring steel project? What kind of kiln are you using? My next project will be a set of floating soupcan elbows I'm going to match to a gambeson I got from steel mastery. Kiln is a homebrew Frankenstein's monster thing. It's a smoker I bought fro...

If they have been hacked - DO NOT go to the webpage. It could do nasty hacker type stuff to people who visit.

If you've seen the hacked page update your virus scanner and do a full scan.

Spring steel 4130 leg - first one done! Pics

Ok, got my first full piece of 4130 armour done. Learned a lot while making this thing. Warped the knee cop twice. Had to remake half the pieces due to warpage and baking on scale. I did a *lot* wrong while making this. But the end result isn't too bad. Second leg is already fired in the kiln and aw...

If they're still in the trash can take them out and take pictures. Post them here.

There are hundreds of trained eyes that will see them and tell you what went wrong. And maybe even how to fix them.

Exactly, the thickness of the oxidation is what is changing the colour of the light bouncing through it. The temper colours are *thin*. Once it gets too thick no light penetrates and returns. Are you sure it's not something chemical? Like impurities in the oxidation or something like that? I mean, ...

When I do my secondary heat treating in my kitchen oven at 500F, my pieces come out purple. A few moments polishing and it goes away.

Aha! Okay. So it's the outer layer of the metal oxidized. Essentially a quickly formed rust layer that peels off because it's cooling at different rates. That's why quenching hot stuff in water bonds the scale to the piece. It all cools at the same rate. And why a hotter flame makes more scale - mor...

Mill scale - what is it?

Just what the title says. What is it? Where does it come from? Every time I heat up a piece and work on it, I get these very thin flakes that pop off the metal. You can see them pretty clearly in any Eric Dube video, too. Are they the outer layer of the metal burning off? Are they carbon deposits fr...

Strange but true - I'm a believer. Had a buddy of mine pick me up a bottle. Put it on the shelf and almost forgot about it. Took a couple of fairly stout past-the-armour shots last practice.
