I think this is one of the best fantasy armors that I have ever seen although there are lots of really great stuff out there. Maybe an old wooden whisky barrel on rollers with a hand crank (lots of work) and maybe use a fine sand with sawdust to soak up the grease or oil.

The difference I see between an SCA kit and kits designed for other uses is that the SCA kit is expected to pass inspection on the battlefield going by SCA rules.
