Re: Martial activites as a group
If you could suddenly develop a new medieval martial activity, that could have the size, scope, and particpation of an organization such as the SCA, what would it involve? What sort of weapons? Fighting styles? Degree of safety, etc? It would involve jousting to unhorse, ground fighting to submissi...

Over 107 and it is rapid, catastrophic and frequently fatal. Umm.. or not.. as one who spiked incredibly high fevers.. that isn't always true. Course, I _CAN_ tell you that no one is going to not know INSTANTLY if you are at that temp just by looking at you.. the hallucinations and lack of motor co...

Chewable Baby Aspirin, 81mg, once daily, can significantly reduce the risk of blood clotting emergencies. Yes there is ample clinical evidence of the efficacy of this. Bruised legs should be exercised to increase blood flow/exchange. You said it brother! Chewable aspirin is an almost constant compa...

I think I'd be more concerned with the long term effects from repeated blows to the head than blood cloting.I've read that Muhammed Ali's problems may stem in part from getting his brains rattled to many times. And he was good, never really got his alot until towards the end..Otto Well then, I shal...

Clinically speaking, I would put more research into the effects of blood clotting from deep leg bruises becoming pulmonary or coronary or even cerebral emboli. That combined with arterio- or atheroschlerosis (especially secondary to obesity - please no one get offended, this is a reality not a dig) ...

THE FLAMING URSUS By... well, Ursus (just because I wanted the TRUTH about the incident known) One fine evening in Concusare camp, I decided to light a fire. Now, as Tinker mentioned to me after this incident: 'Your fire foo is not strong'. Of course, she had the benefit of hindsight, but I digress....

I am interested in this, as a backup weapon system, as I almost always fight glaive or spear in SCA, and my friends nag me costantly about no backup hand weapons for up-close-fighting... What I really want to know is: what is the best low-profile thrusting tip - one that won't make the weapon tip-he...

I also have read wickedly bawdy chansons from the "Troubador Era". You wouldn't have copies or links would you? So that I might peruse them. Sorry mate that I don't have more time to look up these period sources. Most of what I have seen is in books, not online...but here is one from the Troubador ...

Do you mean public TV in the Netherlands or in the US? I'm asking because there's a show called 'Nova' on dutch TV, too. USA TV. Our NOVA is all high-end science stuff and is primarily publicly funded. Dutch public TV can, more or less, air anything it wants. Wow. I bet that is wonderful. It's not ...

The only mention of it I have ever seen was once on a TV documentary. It was on public tv, perhaps on NOVA, and it was obvious that they were being very careful in what they said and did not say. Remember that public tv is subsidized in part by Govt monies, if I am not mistaken...the rest you can in...

My studies indicate the plant is native to India. My studies indicate it was brought to the New World by Europeans. My studies indicate that the Viking ship would have used the crop for rope and textiles, if not for medicine/fun. Fun Fact: The Alpine "Iceman" (osti?) had a belt pouch on him that con...

That fact that only scholars know how prevalent cannbis was throughout history is a testament to the prop...

Sorry about the derailment, people, but I feel a catharsis coming on: The concept, together with the notion of chivalry came to full bloom during the thirteenth century, the apogee in the power and influence of the mounted knight on the battlefield, particularly in France, whose knighthood had the m...

as much chivalry was performed on foot as ahorse. That makes it a misnomer. I entirely disagree. So does dictionary.com: [quote]Word History: The Age of Chivalry was also the age of the horse. Bedecked in elaborate armor and other trappings, horses were certainly well dressed, although they might h...

I wish to point out that the word Chivalry is derived from the French word chivalerie which means deeds of arms accomplished upon horseback. And I just pointed out that that makes it a misnomer. Huh? How on earth does a word make itself a misnomer? The Battle of the Thirty was concluded by a French...

I never accused you of anything. Not everything is about you . I merely quoted you and agreed that modern people misunderstand chivalry. I don't think Gyrth used the word only . He was brighter than that. Methinks thou dost protest overmuch. Then I humbly apologize for both misunderstanding and for...
