A few years ago there was an early period only battle @ GW. I loved that. It was awesome. What ever happened to that? Why didn't it continue? A few years ago, (2003ish) we ran the "Romans vs Celts Battle" at Pennsic. We would be happy to do so again. Our rules were simple. Pre-1000AD 10ft...

Re: Martial activites as a group

If you could suddenly develop a new medieval martial activity, that could have the size, scope, and particpation of an organization such as the SCA, what would it involve? What sort of weapons? Fighting styles? Degree of safety, etc? It would involve jousting to unhorse, ground fighting to submissi...

Over 107 and it is rapid, catastrophic and frequently fatal. Umm.. or not.. as one who spiked incredibly high fevers.. that isn't always true. Course, I _CAN_ tell you that no one is going to not know INSTANTLY if you are at that temp just by looking at you.. the hallucinations and lack of motor co...

Low grade heat-stress has subtle symptoms. Easily missed. I never used the word "stroke".

It also just occurred to me that all of this (especially keto-acidosis) can be exacerbated by "thickened blood" due to dehydration, a common condition of heavy fighters.

Chewable Baby Aspirin, 81mg, once daily, can significantly reduce the risk of blood clotting emergencies. Yes there is ample clinical evidence of the efficacy of this. Bruised legs should be exercised to increase blood flow/exchange. You said it brother! Chewable aspirin is an almost constant compa...

I think I'd be more concerned with the long term effects from repeated blows to the head than blood cloting.I've read that Muhammed Ali's problems may stem in part from getting his brains rattled to many times. Clinically speaking, I would put more research into the effects of blood clotting from deep leg bruises becoming pulmonary or coronary or even cerebral emboli. That combined with arterio- or atheroschlerosis (especially secondary to obesity - please no one get offended, this is a reality not a dig) ...

THE FLAMING URSUS By... well, Ursus (just because I wanted the TRUTH about the incident known) One fine evening in Concusare camp, I decided to light a fire. Now, as Tinker mentioned to me after this incident: 'Your fire foo is not strong'. Of course, she had the benefit of hindsight, but I digress....

I am interested in this, as a backup weapon system, as I almost always fight glaive or spear in SCA, and my friends nag me costantly about no backup hand weapons for up-close-fighting... What I really want to know is: what is the best low-profile thrusting tip - one that won't make the weapon tip-he...

And why name a wardonkey "Viggo"?

Viggo Mortensen portrayed both Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" movies and perhaps more especially, the protagonist in "Hidalgo". I assumed it was one or both of these...quite amusing, really.

Many good ideas to which I would add: We made some heavy wool vests and some shorts that are fitted to wear UNDER your garb as period thermal underwear. Looks way better than modern stuff and works well.

Do you mean public TV in the Netherlands or in the US? I'm asking because there's a show called 'Nova' on dutch TV, too. USA TV. Our NOVA is all high-end science stuff and is primarily publicly funded. Dutch public TV can, more or less, air anything it wants. Wow. I bet that is wonderful. It's not ...

as much chivalry was performed on foot as ahorse. That makes it a misnomer. I entirely disagree. So does dictionary.com: [quote]Word History: The Age of Chivalry was also the age of the horse. Bedecked in elaborate armor and other trappings, horses were certainly well dressed, although they might h...

I wish to point out that the word Chivalry is derived from the French word chivalerie which means deeds of arms accomplished upon horseback. And I just pointed out that that makes it a misnomer. Huh? How on earth does a word make itself a misnomer? The Battle of the Thirty was concluded by a French...
