Big caution with monumental National Hero statues -- These were mostly done during the Romantic/ Nationalist period in the late 19th century or later on -- in that style. Historical research is NEVER a concern on these but rather the national image of the Heroic warrior. (thus Russia's 1...

With Xena's armour, the fitted parts are a garment leather boostier (I have no idea how to spell that) -- something one could buy off-the-rack (pun not really intended). The metal parts are not so fitted but yeah, still best done "on site". The specific Xena armour looks like it was probably cast ra...

I don't know about vikings, but I'm sorry, the only armour that is period if you want to reenact me is a very particular type of maile and plates that's roughly 15th century Turko-Russian. You can see a picture of me in armour at my Armour of the Silk Road site (URL at sig) http://www.armourarchive....

Cyric why do i see so much waxed leather in SCA.?? is there a reason..or anybody can answer One can certainly guess. Early on, references to cuirboli were not clearly understood past the fact that the armour was treated in some way (with "boiling"). You can see early historians speculating that it w...

The problem with research on the Dark Ages is that it was ...dark. So the artists and chroniclers didn't realy see the armour well enough to document it in detail, and, again 'cause it was dark, the artists and chroniclers didn't quite see what they were doing either -- so the images are odd looking...

oh, and as it relates to combat, and the recreation of, were there any period ways of dealing with this, or did nobody who would put on a helm have long hair? Braids. What Nomad said. Beeswax, as far as can be found from the available materials is NOT period for hardening armour. Use Water. ...I wasn't too successful with Cariadoc's recipe though. I'd say reduce the temperature. At this point, my opinion is one is best off throwing leather pieces into a tub of ho...
