Re: That C word
IIRC most authorities agree that "pair of plates" is the contemporary term for what we call a "coat of plates"- pair in this context is used in the archaic sense of "a number of similar objects that are used together" (as in "pair of rosaries" for a rosary in inventories) 15th C sources often menti...

Re: a question on sca legality (finger gauntlets)
whats the difference between those fingers(legality and safety wise) and these The Crimson Forge fingers appear to have two rivet points mounted at one end of the parts rather than a single central mounting point. You can see that a couple of the plates in the first pic posted have spun some. Maybe...

Re: a question on sca legality (finger gauntlets)
Sir Balin has fought in a minimum gladiator rig. Braver man than I! Tim, the biggest concern I have is that the finger plates have little overlap between plates. The bridging effect of the overlap is what protects from crushing force. They are also not tied together by articulation so the individual...

Re: 2 stick advice
My left shoulder doesn't work well and I still do OK with two sword. You just have to work around the problem. Design blows that don't cause the strain that makes it unhappy. Straight cuts to the hip and torso (killing blow) might work since they don't require a lot of rotation in the wrist joint. D...

A leather Lorica I made in 91 or so turned up on the field at Pennsic a couple years back. I passed it on to someone at the Ponte Alto fighter practice at some point before we moved in 95. It had somehow made it into Black Diamonds loaner gear. It was still in decent shape and the guy who was wearin...

Dec. 2009 I got weight loss surgery and since then I have dropped from 370lbs to 200lbs. I have fought sporadically during this time (2 months on, 3 months off etc.) Since losing the weight, I've noticed a couple things about my fighting. For starters, I'm having a hard time generating power. I use...

Re: Woods for pole weapons? (Not SCA)
If you're looking to really swinging these hafts hard you might try riven rather than sawn wood. We've seen even 1kg mace hafts split along the wood grain. Good point for strength but riving is usually done green, IIRC. So you have to source fresh wood and then rough process, dry it and then do fin...

Re: more then one way to skin a rattan.
I use the planer at work for flat sides. I leave the skin on the striking surfaces.
A hatchet to remove the dried grass/leaf ends from the growth rings. Just skim it down the skin and it pops off.
Hoof rasp and draw knife for the grip. I try to avoid sanding as rattan dust makes me sneeze.

I've done it once, and will never do it again. I've made hundreds of fencing helms with perf plate, and only one with mesh. The fencing mask mesh is FORMED IN ITS FINAL SHAPE... you can't reshape it and still have it retain its mesh integrity. When you cut into the mesh, it frays terribly and you c...
