Re: Talk to me about Pennsic!
This...sounds fantastic. Violence fun and friends are why I do this... Losthelm, this is not my first war. It is, however, my first Pennsic. Or at least, that's what we are establishing :o I've been going for 22 years and still manage to have fun. :) You will enjoy yourself. To build on what losthe...

Re: Talk to me about Pennsic!
Pennsic is like trying to drink from a firehose. You get your fill but alot gets past you. You can get some of the best individual fights of your life in the pickups before the war points start. The massed combat is a volume unseen anywhere else but the big wars. If you are guarding royalty you will...

Re: Armoured ruffs?
I would suggest that the burgonet and gorget should be sized in a way that they overlap sufficiently to not require a hood. Mine works that way and I have never had a marshal concern with it. Really helps with heat too. When building either for rapier is it really important to have the counterpart f...

While planishing and grinding I was unpleasantly surprised to find two cracks in the metal! Both are visible on the last picture. One in the far corner of the eye on the left, and one on the right near the top of the nasal. I immediately stopped, but I have no idea how to fix this. I'm really bumme...

In one of the threads Tom linked Ironmonger Armory is mentioned. I cannot reccomend him more strongly! I have been buying things from him for over 20 years. He makes custom hammers. I'm sure if you sent him a link to the video your picture is from that he could make the hammer. His website link to h...

As Russ said, they aren't truly waterproof, but they do shed water well. I kept my flint, tinder, and steel in mine for ages and never found my supplies to wet to use, no matter how much I hung out in the rain. Are the cheeks just tack welded in? If so then I would be tempted to pull them and start over. Metal is cheap. If they are in more permanently then can you weld in the material where you need it? It looks like that area will be mostly covered by bar grill anyway. Course then you have weld clean up t...

I just tip the metal up and use a pipe stake, bichorn or other straight thing to make my "saddle" shapes. I think at this point it isn't worth the bother to make one. But that is just me. Maybe a silly question... maybe one I should ask in the Armor Design/Construction forum, but... Why are, historically, more knees not made in such a fashion as those alpinestars there? There are also examples of agreed upon field signs like a sprig of pine tied to your person to identify your comrades. So make sure the MOL brings a Christmas tree and a ball of twine to your next event!

There are no rules regarding excessive force. There is a rule which says you should not deliberatley injure someone. I gave that guy the fight I thought he needed. Which blow broke the helm? I kind of wonder... I've been making helms for years on end with bargrills using 1/4 inch dia. zinc plated steel bars. The plating keeps the bars shiny/prevents rust. If you are going to start welding them then zinc is your enemy. You will have to completely remove the coating at the welds or risk ...
