Re: Wallace Buckler A318 Progress UPDATE 8/12/15
The images on the Wallace drive give some clues on the fabric but much of this is supposition. I happen to work at a museum so I asked our Textile conservator to squint at them and give me an opinion. She thought it might be what is called a "Rep" fabric. This was a new one for me. https://en.wikipe...

Re: Wallace Buckler A318 Progress UPDATE 8/12/15
Now on to the liner leathers and fabric. Here I was kind of shooting blind with only the pics from the Wallace USB drive to guide me. I had to make some assumptions on leather thickness, rivets and washer size, fabric choice. As with every step I go back to my test pieces and try some things until I...

Re: Wallace Buckler A318 Progress and musings
Got this complete before Pennsic and am just now getting to process the photos running up to its completion. Here goes! The hook was made out of some 1/8" plate I had lying around. The original was probably drawn out of larger stock and flattened where it was needed. The details on the hook are cut ...

I am currently renewing my passport. I don't know that I can (emotionally) pay $1400 to ship things that will fit in free luggage on a flight. Assuming I do book a ticket, sure. I am happy to look at things. Wade I understand completely! I'm shocked at the estimate. Does it get an "Art" designation...

Re: Kydex wisby gauntlet kit
It does explain that there is a market for plastic out there in HEMA though. I'd be wary on 1/8" ABS having the rigidity to do it without some introduction of heat formed ribs or edge shaping. Too much flex is a bad thing when trying to protect hands. And lest I sound too fussy, my first pair of ga...

I will have all of the new stuff. I really will. At the moment, I don't know quite how... The estimate for shipping came in at just over $1400. For shipping. If I agree to be part of a consolidated shipment to save on costs. Really? $1400 for shipping? Wade Sounds like a plane ticket budget! ...

You are not allowed to wear metal armour in HEMA because you are allowed to grapple your opponent. Imagine getting hit in the throat with a 16ga steel gauntlet during a tumble... I and my 1560s articulated gorget are fine with that ;) I think Sean M's description of tribe recognition is pretty clos...

Valdred Those hammers are very beautiful, but like everyone is saying, they are too heavy for the job. I also have grave doubts as to the suitability of that style of handle for a hammer of that size. I think you are setting your self up for trouble. Mac I agree. Those handles look like they may wo...

I love round robin or bear pit style tourneys where you get all you can fight. Conditioning really shows by the end.

Re: Storing Armor in Plastic Vacuum Packs / Bags
I have a fair amount of success keeping my blued steel from rusting by keeping them in terrycloth bags (old towels) sprayed down with gun oil inside.
Fight, lay gear out in the sun to dry(if possible), mist with gun oil, then put in oil bags.

I like where you are headed with that rig! Very nice garb underneath as well. I'd offer a couple observations if you want some suggestions from afar. From the wear pattern it looks like your shoulder armour is conflicted on whether they should be munions or spaulders. Munions would ride under the ed...

The morions and burgonets I have converted trended on the small side. The Burg I rebuilt from the ears down to accommodate my neck length. One thing to look out for with morions and cabbasets for C&T is back of the head protection. Depending on neck length and how it sits on your head it may need a ...

Re: 15th C. Italian rerebrace question...
I used to have full-wrap rear-braces and cut a lot of it away for SCA combat. They would collide with the breastplate and while minor loss of flexibility might be acceptable in life vs death protection, it's not so important for sticks. I do prefer then to go at least as far forward as the edge of ...

Wades right. The weights don't lie. I had always assumed they were solid as well until I put the bare buckler on the scale. Without the catchers and the belt hook it weighs 2 lbs. I only have around .65 lbs to work with to stay in the range of the original. All that bar stock would add up in short o...
