Re: dyeing when wet

I've found that using a black alcohol base dye on damp leather leaves the dye chalky when dry. Anybody else have this problem? Daggrim Chalky? You mean the dye is drying on the surface and you get a lot of residue when 'dry'? Lots of buffing and agood finish, or a bit less dye. The water is keeping...

Re: Leatherworking question.

I'm making a new leather vambrace, and I soaked the leather in warm water to be able to work it. Now that I am done stamping, etc. I wonder if there is any way to speed up the drying process so I can start dying the piece. Can I put it in the oven? Temperture suggestions? I know it can burn or shri...

Re: plastic (or other) armour construction

Hi all, just wondered if anyone knows of any resources/websites that I could use to help me make a few pieces of plastic totally farb armour for myself and a few others to reduce injury and hopefully not impede combat too much. Not sure what materials to use, but wont be using leather. I am conside...

Ya I like those ones, I'd like a taller version of those like you were saying but I'm not sure if it makes sense. Though I have never had a problem being flexible off a pattern. So little has been found that if they look like an offshoot of a documeted pattern I personally wouldn't care much. There'...

I like the fold over toggle closures short boot or tall shoe, something like what Bohemond does. But if I'm going Vendel I wonder if I should... if I'm trying to get the boots period I might as well get them as close as I can. I have a bit of a style dilema, my first real kit was based on nothing, m...

I'm changing my kit a bit, I'm getting the brass for a vendel helmet and an aventail to go with it. I actually am more interested in making some period specific footwear than I was 2 or 3 months ago. So if anyone has any ideas for "pre-viking" sweden footwear, I'd love to see some links on...

[quote="Chris Gilman"]Magnus, I have never posted the picture of these shoes of mine. I do not have them on my portfolio page because they are so bad. I do not own my own leather business, and if I did, I would most certainly not have posted photos of them. I would think a guy who owns his...

Based on what? The craftsmanship equals or surpasses what a period piece would've/could've had. It may not be your cup of tea, but there is at least skill in what was presented, and that was the coolest you could be? I am sorry you think period shoes (anything) would have "craftsmanship" ...

Oh, there are a lot of levels lower than hideous. I know because I've crafted lots of things in abyssal quality. I wasn't even commenting on the period-authenticity of the boots, just the overrall look. I guess I owe it to be specific at least so... 1. Leather is too thin 2. Two tone color scheme t...

I also after some tweaking like the overall look of them better than the ones on that page. To be fair they are authentic viking shoes. I'd be concerned with those prices myself, though can't say good or bad on their product. You get what you pay for. If it's cheap it's cheap for a reason. In picking your armor I'd have comfort as my #1 priority, be sure it's going to fit well because nothing makes you fight less than uncomfortable ...

A welded Ti aventail will not look that different than a mild steel hauberk. Knuut's Ti maille has a dull grey appearance (much less shiny than the stainless) that I think blends very well with mild steel. I'm trying to dig around on our Priory website to find some examples. We have a number of com...

Yeah, he's right. Patchy and variegated isn't a very good look in armor. It's like not mixing stainless and mild where you can see 'em both, or in the same component. I've heard a lot of guys talk about their "ducking and movement" and for swordwork, particularly with a shield, I can't sa...

Magnus, why are you concerned with a marginal weight difference of about three pounds in your harness' all-up weight? You're not going flying (like one poster here) and you're not going white-water kayaking, not in a bascinet armour. As to their respective looks/style, I say nothing -- it's your ha...

Welded Titanium vs. Rivetted Steel Aventail

I'm getting an aventail, but I'm having a few concerns. Weight, vs. looks. What is the weight difference between the 2? Torvaldr guarantees that his won't soften in sunlight. If you don’t mind me asking do you just use straight wax? Do you have any idea how hot it has to get before it starts getting soft? My 50/50 mix can’t handle over about 85- 90 deg. I have heard of other that using different mixes/methods which don’t soften up but I prefer your design. My mix ...
