Leather Helmet

My first leather helmet... because I have no steel making capabilities in an apartment.

Was something new.

Auction: Brown Bazuband Prototype

I have a set of brown single piece bazubands that I didn't like the design of (prototype). Ttrying to go all Torvaldr / House of the Wolf and failing. They are just the elbow to forarm with no hinged piece, no strapping. You'd need a piece for the forearm, then strap em.. they're made long and could...

I got a few questions, First are the sides of the elbows rigid enough to work for SCA armor by themselves, or would I have to modify them? (I'd rather not, they look so nice!) Secondly, what size are these? I'm a large fellow and believe that I'll have some trouble with most armor due to this, most...

Well, if Paul says it's good then it's good. Period. I ain't doing it, it will f me up. I tried it for a very long time (I was taught it by Sir Marshall of Eaglesbane MGC) and it didn't help me. I have openly admitted that Frozen Man doesn't do much for those people who are learning how to recogniz...

True enough, whatevers fun. One things is for certain, we're getting more out of this drill than if we were doing nothing. And if this drill gets us to meet up every 2nd day, it will also get us doing other things while we're there. But I'm going to try and think of how to change the drill up a bit,...

I think you're missing our points. No offense, but I doubt that in your slow-work you are throwing shots, blocking, or maneuvering to their natural option points and then reacting and re-reacting from each natural option-point and beat-point in the irregular step-wise fashion that the normal ebb-an...

I think you're missing our points. We're talking about rhythm and flow. That it is teaching you a constant, regular action/reaction/action/reaction rhythm in a constant-flow decision-space. No offense, but I doubt that in your slow-work you are throwing shots, blocking, or maneuvering to their natu...

I've watched those videos, and do indeed do those drills. Do they say something about our specific drill in the video? Or were you just pointing out good drills to watch?

I also love movement, sword blocks, dodges, etc, and perhaps that biase is making me like this drill a lot.

And I do a lot of movement, sword blocks, and dodges, well a lot for my level of fighting I think (not super high).

Changing levels, that kind of stuff.

I believe that Sir Vitus is pointing out that it teaches and trains false flow in the reactive decision-space -- that you can continuously read and re-orient offense, defense, and maneuver to act and react to opponents when you are moving in slow-time. When you are closing and withdrawing (maneuver...

Hmmm... We are certainly working on flow though, I wonder if there's a way to mix the drill up a bit. I love the drill, it's fun, we do in my mind mix it up a fair bit. And it does indeed train us to watch for openings and try and create opening. We don't waltz as much as one might think, though I d...

So your concern is that we'll be waltzing, predictable, our timeing will always be 3/4, same beat, throwing... blocking... throwing... blocking..... and a 1.2..3... 1..2..3... 1..2..3... 1..2..3. etc. etc. or something similair.

Dude, trust me on this. The goal is to break up, interrupt and jump into blank spots in the opponent's rhythm. Do not train yourself to dance WITH anyone. While they are dancing (fighting with their "style") they are leaving something undefended- train to either hit that place or to make ...

You are making an assumption that Knights are unfamiliar with the other forms. There are plenty of Knights who fence, CA (or receive fire), C&T, or Siege. Knights are as good as anyone at giving some input into this. g- (as a side note, I'm leaning towards being against an all encompassing 4th ...

We're just pretty happy with the drill, so I have my sad face on. We're looking for openings in motion, just slowly, we're both pretty good at not closing an opening that we couldn't really close, if we commit we commit, etc. etc. And though we move slowly, I would think the same theory that slow wo...

That rhythmic slow work is BAD BAD BAD. You target a place really slowly, only to have your partner slowly block it. This only trains you to block slow shots!! Have one guy freeze perfectly still in various common body postures with a variety of weapons and shields. He is not allowed to block. One ...

Slow Work - With a Partner

A friend of mine and I have started (we hope regularly) getting together to do slow work and a bit of pell. Mostly we enjoy the slow work, it's unarmored, but with sword and board, keeping things slow and fluid and trying not to break our rhythm. 5 minutes of that, then some light pell and chat, the...

For the argument "We don't know what a Peerage Level Fighter is" How did they know what a Peerage Level Fighter was for the first knight? Or a Peerage Level A&S for the First Laurel? Or how much service was the first Pelican? A bar has to be set somewhere for that bar to be attained o...

I disagree with you. The single hardest aspect of this situation to figure out is whether or not the fighting is at a peerage level or not. Agreed, but that can not be discovered by a Knight testing that person at that persons chosen form is what I'm getting at. I agree it will be hard to find what...

Ideally, this would involve active participation. Think a Cut and Thrust guy should be made a peer? Then the knights should evaluate him the way they do a candidate for knighthood...go out and fight him. I'm not a peer, or a white scarf. But in my uneducated opinion, I don't think go out and fight ...

I think the thing I dislike the most about archery is just getting hit without the option to hit back. Even now that Combat Archers have to wear minimum requirements here for heavy (is that SCAwide?), I still have the chance of them just yielding if I run them down. The best of them are pretty quick...

SCA Legal Leather Helms - Trials

I just got the word that they're going to be starting trials for SCA legal leather helms in An Tir next week. They aren't 100% leather, supposedly they're going to be using a steel ridge base (I'm not a metal guy, no idea what that means). I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the steel...
