Sod flaps work very well. There are a couple of ways I've seen them used. 1. Outside - trench and pile the excavated soil on the sod flaps. Rain runs down the walls and right into the trench. Soil creates a seal. 2. Inside - sod flaps overlapped by ground cloth. We'll be trenching at Gulf Wars. The ...

You're right, Oswyn. I'm thinking solely of the time when tightly-fitted hosen were the fashion (late 14th-16th centuries). Thank you for supporting that the two materials are not interchangeable. One simply cannot get the same look in hose from linen as from wool. Linen, because it doesn't stretch,...

Linen and wool are not interchangeable. Historically, hose were wool, because twill wool cut on the bias will stretch. That stretchiness is how you get fashionable, close-fitting hose. Linen does not stretch like wool. That translates into unsightly, baggy knees and ankles. Ew. You're better off get...

Re: Wearing a 15th/16th century suit - a bit confused
The cuirass is self-explanatory, and I plan to attach the pauldrons to the gorget via leather straps. You can also point the spaulders to the jack/gambeson. 1) The legs - I have leather tabs attached to the top of the legs, but tying them to the arming pants makes the pants move downward too much a...

How to put this delicately...? Not to put too fine a point on it, but... ...as they say in the SCA, the only real reservation is a paid reservation. In other (admittedly coarse) words, the first person to pony up is the person who gets it. Delivery will have to wait until we can connect, of course. ...

This link: m gives a table of relative values of early 14th-century currencies in 1994 dollars. This link: m says that today's USD is worth approximately 68% of the 1994 dollar. (In other words, a 2010 USD is worth $0.68 1994 USD.) Thus one pound Sterling was worth US$600 in 1994, or approximately U...

Dibs removed, because... Note: I cannot ship this. The ridge pole exceeds the maximum of every shipper. Plus shipping will cost a freakin' ton. I will also entertain the idea of you picking it up here at Chez RH. Of course we'd have to coordinate schedules, and ours is becoming rapidly nuts. But the...

Canvas Wall Tent For Sale - SOLD!
Okay, friends, we have a tent for sale! We have a canvas wall tent in our garage that's surplus for our needs. We bought it used, used it a couple of times, and revised our event-canvas strategy. 10 feet wide by 20 feet long. 8 foot ridge height with 4 foot walls. Sod flaps all around. Doors on both...

Your good friends at Reconstructing History have two things which might do the trick for you, in terms of patterns. I can't speak to their applicability to a specifically Rus portrayal, for they are Danish. But they're based on extant garments, so you can be sure of the historicity of that, at least...

While I don't recall that rig on the field, I do recall pretty much dropping my jaw looking at the work and being told that it had all been done with hand tools. I know Vermin showed me a sick - seriously twisted - piercework BP at the Homestead ... It was indeed very nice! It gleamed like the sun ...

Now, the aftermath, where I went from that rig to an aluminum segmented BP that was so blinged out it just BEGGED people to try and jack me up? My defense went up astronomically, but it was a SERIOUSLY painful couple of months.... I think I remember that rig. All pierced shiny brass and sh!t, with ...

Re: Buff coat
Thanks for your input. The coat from Spain is under $300. US, the other from the UK is just over $700. US. What to do???? Depend on what you want; what are your needs? The one from Spain looks like really thin - i.e., NOT buff - leather. They're also not the right cut. The ones from UK are bang-on ...

Respectfully m'seur, no. I know at least I have entered a competition with no desire for feedback. I entered to win the competition. Apparently many kingdoms don't have any judge/entrant interaction. I don't understand how someone can accurately judge an item without talking to the person who made it. Written docs only go so far, and likewise, written comments are easily misunderstood. Since when are judging sheets not in...
