Sod flaps work very well. There are a couple of ways I've seen them used. 1. Outside - trench and pile the excavated soil on the sod flaps. Rain runs down the walls and right into the trench. Soil creates a seal. 2. Inside - sod flaps overlapped by ground cloth. We'll be trenching at Gulf Wars. The ...

You're right, Oswyn. I'm thinking solely of the time when tightly-fitted hosen were the fashion (late 14th-16th centuries). Thank you for supporting that the two materials are not interchangeable. One simply cannot get the same look in hose from linen as from wool. Linen, because it doesn't stretch,...

Linen and wool are not interchangeable. Historically, hose were wool, because twill wool cut on the bias will stretch. That stretchiness is how you get fashionable, close-fitting hose. Linen does not stretch like wool. That translates into unsightly, baggy knees and ankles. Ew. You're better off get...

Re: Wearing a 15th/16th century suit - a bit confused

The cuirass is self-explanatory, and I plan to attach the pauldrons to the gorget via leather straps. You can also point the spaulders to the jack/gambeson. 1) The legs - I have leather tabs attached to the top of the legs, but tying them to the arming pants makes the pants move downward too much a...

This link: m gives a table of relative values of early 14th-century currencies in 1994 dollars. This link: m says that today's USD is worth approximately 68% of the 1994 dollar. (In other words, a 2010 USD is worth $0.68 1994 USD.) Thus one pound Sterling was worth US$600 in 1994, or approximately U...

Okay, friends, we have a tent for sale! We have a canvas wall tent in our garage that's surplus for our needs. We bought it used, used it a couple of times, and revised our event-canvas strategy. 10 feet wide by 20 feet long. 8 foot ridge height with 4 foot walls. Sod flaps all around. Doors on both...

If it's not specifically marked, the only way to tell is to know what you're seeing. It's an art, really. ;) You just learn to look at a piece of fabric and know that it's 5-oz linen.

I wish there was another answer, but there really isn't. Sorry!

Well...ten times the price? No. But at the price paid, yes it's a steal. $25 to $50 is about right, up to $100 if it's in really good condition. From what I can tell in the photos, it appears to be a mass-produced Victorian "gothic" piece. They're relatively common on the East Coast of the...
