We have a big ol' tent we're not using. It used to belong to Syke's Sutlering, many many moons ago. It's a long wall tent, with three uprights supporting a central ridge. 5' walls (or so), with a sh!tload (technical term) of short uprights. Unfortunately, I don't remember what size it is, and it's a...

Okay, here's the skinny. My contacts have known Gary Soame for twenty years. Yes, they are a reputable business; you will receive the product you order. Unfortunately, their products are not terribly historically accurate. They are machine-made, and while they sort-of look the part, they're not real...

I'm not sure about that. Knowing how to walk on slick soles does not mean you can do it in every condition - I wear heels every day, my soles have no profile underneath whatsoever. I can walk on cobblestone, wet grass, wet polished granite, moldy wood, whatever, because they´re what my feet know -...

I applaud your enthusiasm for a more period solution... but I think you will spend money for a half-solution that you will not like and will grow out of. I would recommend putting the time into smaller projects and the money in your tent jar. When the tent jar is full buy one you like. In the end y...

Walking in hobnails _all_ the time is uncomfortable, somewhat dangerous (hit a rock path in them sometime.. GOING DOWN!) and expensive.. Is not. I just spent the better part of a week in hobnailed boots. My boots were broken in, so I was comfy. I haven't lost a hobnail in months, and even if I did,...

Ok, Bob, but you're cherry-picking what I wrote. Course I am. It's more fun that way. Including one doublet with points on the shoulders (albeit, not to tie on sleeves) in England; the youth's doublet from Hever Castle in Kent. More smoking gunses. The existence of one doublet without detach...

2. Surviving examples. Arnold's got a couple of doublets with tied-on sleeves, such as the green youth's doublet in the Nederlands Kostuum-museum (I've got the danged book in my lap). I mean, unless you want to tell me Arnold's wrong, but there's the garment right there with ties around the armhole...

Mr Parris: Gotcha. I misunderstood the intent of what you said. We agree. Gordon: Well put. To be fair, every era has these discussions. We have 'em in WWII reenacting, too - and that's with buildings full of written accounts, piles of photographs, and lots of people still alive who were there . In ...

SO I did a little more research on the detachable sleeves. Janet Arnold's book has at least two examples of doublets with detachable sleeves. One is a child's from somewhere in the Netherlands, and the other is from Italy. She also lists an English loose gown with it's own sleeves; I think it menti...

Somomailler: Well done, sir! I urge you to donate to the Red Cross yourself, however; that way you can write the donation off on your taxes. Italo Norman: Certainly. We in the more developed world should do all we can. Herr Hauptmann: I really haven't a clue, as I haven't looked into that particular...

Haiti Relief
Reconstructing History would like to announce that, from now until the end of January, we will donate 10% of each sale to the Red Cross to assist in disaster relief in Haiti and other places. I'd also like to urge other merchants here on the Archive to do the same. Together, we can make a difference...

I don't have all that many pet peeves anymore. The few I've got are pretty huge buttons, though. Glasses: I wear contacts when I can at LH events. Sometimes I wear glasses at SCA events, but I try to refrain from doing so unless my eyes are really bugging me. I don't get bent when others wear glasse...
