IMO, replication involves getting the look right. If that means piecing, it means piecing. Also, depending on the cut of the garment, piecing to replicate narrower loom widths gives you more fitting opportunities, doesn't it?

2. Surviving examples. Arnold's got a couple of doublets with tied-on sleeves, such as the green youth's doublet in the Nederlands Kostuum-museum (I've got the danged book in my lap).
