Brewer, Meric also makes "target" crossbows, according to his website. When you saw them, did they look more authentic than the CA bows? (I don't think the target crossbows are pictured on his website.) Could they perhaps be used for CA, or is the poundage too high? (I'm interested in per...

Meric's crossbows are excellent workmanship, sturdy and well-fitted to the SCA battlefield. I'd have bought one at Pennsic, but... It's unfortunate that they're all belly-cockers. If you can deal with the social fallout from using them as the maker intended, good on yer! That's the sole reason I did...

I've been thinking about your expanded thoughts, especially the requirements. The only one I have any real beef with is the reading part. That's going to be a toughie to enforce. More than that, one would hope that anyone joining the group would already be fairly widely-read on the subject and have ...

If you can't be arsed to make Andrew's recipe - I can't - you can buy it from Darkwood Armory. It's called Max Wax, and verily it rocketh mightily. I use it on everything from sallet to eating knives.

You're preaching to the choir, Bob. I subscribe to everything you've said, and have for a long time. My astonishment at the exposed braies thing is not a matter of research methodology, but rather my ignorance on the subject matter. I've never studied clothes in depth, which is why recently I've po...

You should know by now that you can't prove a negative! Of course I do. But Bob seems pretty emphatic that braies were never worn like shorts except during times of hard labor. Nah, that's not a reenactorism. That's a tongue-in-cheek Pennsic-ism. I have yet to see it outside of Pennsic. Now, once people start doing it around Jamestowne, *then* it's a reenactorism. In your case, with the Bathhouse Babe thing, yeah, that's tongue in cheek. But I'm not talking about that. Wh...

I think it's a stretch to take the Hastings manuscript back to the 14th century. The manuscript dates to ca. 1450. Yes, I know it's thought to be a copy of an earlier work, but that work cannot be dated as it is completely unknown. I think it's irresponsible to push the date far enough back as to ju...

aegidius, ignore everything Steve posted. So for the 15th century, then, there is no sleeveless vest type garment for supporting your hose, except for laborers? Bluntly, "Yes." Until research unearths more examples. Because when I asked the question in the thread I referenced, about hangi...

aegidius - I think there's a little confusion here. The vest-like underdoublet to which you refer is mostly a conjecture, although there are many reenactors who do use it. I'd be happy to revise that statement though, if others can show good evidence. You're most certain to get an accurate look by ...

6d per man per day. I think that is wage rate not mercenary rate. Quite right, and the rate for a mounted archer, at that. Dismounted archers, it's thruppence per day, unless you're on garrison duty; that rate was slightly different. I can't remember if it's higher or lower. This is a late C15 rate...

True dat, Jeff! We can get bored just like anyone else. The good merchants - i.e., the ones with actual historical stuff - know their product and can really help you. But you have to have a fairly precise idea of when/where your impression is set. For example, "1470 England", "1350 Fr...

Yes, if "argent, four pallets sable" is clear of "paly argent and sable". Here's the kicker: Even if technically under the RfS the number of lines is distinctive, it still has to pass 'The Dart-Board Test', where the really, really close armory is drawn in color on a standard sub...
