are we going to start having age divisions then? i was describing the SCA to a GSI the other day and he was amazed that we didn't have age or weight classes (or general skill classes of any sort). Age divisions would favor those younger in that they wouldn't be getting their asses handed to them by...

I just revisited this topic to add a picture, but I think you missed the big thing, Durasteel. Yes, it gaps, but more importantly, the knee cop isn't solid, like most of the ones we see, but it is in two halves (look at the line on the other knee), and pivots at a single point. The knees on the Gali...

Osprey's Constantinople 1453 shows three surviving helmets with the body of the helmet added to the cap (pp 72-73). There are also other examples depicted within its pages. The raw materials in the MA&Ren were far more valuable than labor. It would make little sense to grind off vast amounts of ...

Re: Survey: How much would you pay for an academic book...

I'm currently investigating publishers, but the problem is that many of the academic publishers would have a final tag of around $90 per copy. In my opinion, the quality of the work merits the price, but I want to see what the market thinks. It would be new information and insights, hardback, perfe...

Aluminum varies between really, really soft, to really, really hard. It depends on the alloy, and how it has been treated, or not treated, to 'artificially age harden' it.

I've seen a helmet made this way. The body was made of one piece, and bilaterally symetrical, with the strip (keyhole shaped, with the rounded part over the top of the helm) to join it together. It was plausible.

It depends on where you are talking. The Italians seem to be big on heavy lance against heavy lance. Look up Paulo Uccello for some damned riveting artwork of men in melee after the first charge. You see men with hammers and side swords mixing it up on horseback over a field of broken lances. The a...

16g SS is roughly equivalent in protection to 14g mild steel. But it will be tougher to work. Generally speaking, when working it, the impact will dent the area the hammer hit, while with MS, it will also deform the area around the strike. Welding is not a problem, you simply use the appropriate wir...

Many effigies were painted. It makes sense, that if the original colors were blue&red, that they'd touch them up in blue&red, etc. I was looking at a book today, and where the stone was broken, the broken parts had been painted blue, just like the body of the surcoat.
