Be aware that international wire transfer fees can be more than you expect. I ordered 8 copies and when I went to Wells Fargo to send the wire transfer, they told me the fee was $42! Ouch. If I knew it was going to be so high, I would have ordered another couple of copies. - Scott What was the ship...

That IS rather odd. I find it suspicious, but considering the variety of burgeonets I've seen (for example), I can't personally rule it as being either an obvious forgery, or authentic.

You get a piece of reasonable size, comparable to what you want to make (1/2 breastplate, 4x4" square, etc), and start whacking the crap out of it. Its called 'destructive testing' ;), you can use rattan, wood, hammers, etc, to determine what it takes to cause it to fail.

There are similar ones that are original, I believe. I'm not sure there is any way to tell if this one is the same as the one originally on this particular helmet. Whawell sold a LOT of armor. There is a bit of debate on the best way to 'restore' missing parts, and they did whatever they wanted in t...

Groups in the SCA are allowed to provide stipends (unless something has changed) to offset the costs (primarily gas) of the members to do things like that. Usually we don't because the demos are local, and driving 5 miles or so doesn't seem like such an expense.

I don't think shields ever went away, they were always the cheapest way to protect a low level soldier. There are some Italian paintings that show footsoldiers with shields, c1460-1490, and they do not appear to be pavises, either in form (large oval), or function. I'll try to remember to look for t...

We don't charge, but we accept donations. There have been times when our 'demos' have been more in the line of 'entertainment' (dancing at a dinner) and we've been given about $150.

We don't suggest the amount, or request a fee. Thats why its called a gratuity. ;)

Yes, I'm pretty sure that buttugly black one was.

Maximillian was probably as much of an armorer as Al Gore was the inventor of the internet.

He was a big patron, and loved armor, but actually making it and inventing techniques? No.
