Yes, that would be missing a visor, probably the typical 'sparrowbeak'. The pauldrons would overlap in the back, what you see on top are reinforces for them.

You can have the barbute, the mail, the brig and nearly full plate arms and legs and be perfectly fine. There are several late 15th C examples similar to this in Madrid.

Here is what the result of the conversation was: That it may be legal, but it isn't very nice and isn't going to win a person many friends?

I wasn't there, so this is second hand.

Agree/disagree, why?

Did they view archers as peasants? Or did they consider archers/archery to be valuable? I would think that nearly everyone would have their version of an 'arming sword' if they weren't a peasant.

The best thing you can get is medical styrofoam chests. They have to keep things like blood and organs really cold. They are much thicker, and last a lot longer.

Grabbing hafts

This has come up offlist, so I thought I'd gather some perspective here.

How do you regard grabbing the haft of someone's weapon, or having yours grabbed?

You will find thigh-highs into the 16th C, as well. I dispute that they were only worn while riding, because you often see people on foot wearing them, and some have 'garters' attached to belts underneat their clothing to hold them up while they are walking about.

The Galiot's armor in the Met (1527) has an armet, so the period you are looking at should have them available as well.

I'd say it is very much a lorica hamata. The shoulder pieces are the give-away.

I can't remember offhand, but one of the Roman historians wrote that in the days of the Republic, men that were worth 10,000 dinare (10,000 days wages) bought mail to arm themselves with when they served.

Linden is very similar in weight and strength to pine.

16thC, yes many of the surviving round shields are about 22-24". This is also an era of plate armor, and the shields weren't the primary protection.

I've done something similar with my knees that I've done with my elbows. Sew the padding into cloth 'pockets', and sew them to the metal. http://home.armourarchive.org/members/alcyon/HenryVIII_1520_Elbows/elbows.jpg http://home.armourarchive.org/members/alcyon/HenryVIII_1520_Elbows/elbows3.jpg

I prefer 'moderately sized, and well formed', myself. I don't think the coin really says much. Some people are drop-dead georgeous, but if you get them at the wrong angle, it doesn't show. She was Greek, so if you look at what classical Greeks considered 'beautiful', you'd probably have a better ide...
