IMO, to say that it was not used for defense as well as offense seems to indicate that if anyone takes a shot at you that you will endeavor to get your sword out of the way rather than block with it. From what I've seen there are limited attacks available with this, and it is used more defensively. ...

Why would the ballista (kills multiple foe at once) be considered more "chivalrous" than a xbow and therefor okay?

I've often thought, that in period, an "unchivalrous" weapon was any weapon that allowed a peasant to kill a knight. One of my German A&A books (translated into English) makes the argument that "last generations" peasant weapon becomes the status symbol or symbol of authority for the next. Bishop Od...

Guns from Crecy on.
Mongols, Japanese and Welsh approved of archery. The Way of the Horse and Bow was before The Way of the Sword.

Henry VIII loved archery and encouraged it.

Maximillian ("The Last Knight") did not approve of guns, although Charles V did.

I was looking at a book on Florence the other day, and the armorer's guild opened up to sword makers to increase their political power. The armorer's guild made cuirasses, there were separate guilds for helmets, greaves, gauntlets, etc. Guilds were specialized, at least in Florence.

Yes, they are both "guaged" by the thickness. Steel is usually rated as 16g, 18g, 14g, etc., while aluminum is usually measured by it's thickness by thousandths (0.063", 0.100" etc.). It probably because when they started measuring steel, the machinery used to make it wasn't as accurate as the stuff...

We used to do 'Le Mans Start" grand melee's on occasion in Ansteorra. The difference being, while everyone is in a circle, each person is allowed one weapon, which is placed in a pile in the center. ONE weapon is removed from the circle. At "Lay on!" everyone trys to get a weapon, and you don't have...
