like many things in the SCA (europeans with japanese armour, pagans, helmets 100 years older than armour, kings that were kick ass warriors) it was possibly done in period, but to nowhere near the degree we see it.

I think perhaps you may have missed something... If i were to do it, Yes, i would try to model it off historical pipes (thus clay would probably be the material of choice. As to the filter issue, given the length of the pipe, it shouldnt matter. you might not realize where it ended, but i'm sure you'd figure it out... http://www.armourarchive.org/...

Most modern pipe tobacco is cured with aromatics (burboun, cherry, etc) to provide a pleasant taste/ smell. It also tends to be a bit moist.
