The brittish redcoats were, IIRC, dyed with madder.

Here's a ransom image from the web showing a madder dyed wool yarn:

I think the thing with British NCOs is that they tend to be career soldiers, often more so than their junior officers, and so are where the experience and dedication are particularly concentrated. Generally it is the same for the US, as far as I can tell (esp as you get above Sergeant (e-5)) A seni...

Actually, the Aztecs had armour. It was several layers of cloth, stitched together and soaked in some kind of brine to stiffen it. (IE terribly like a linothorax) The picture below is fromt he book "The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico" (ISBN 0-8070-5501-8) and is based on ...

Yuo could also use electrolytic rust removal- all it would take is a battery charger, a bucket (I use an old kitty litter bucket) and some soda ash (sodium carbonate- availible in the pool chemical section)

Oh,.. and a sacraficial hunk of metal.

I dunno if I would say it would be "useless" I mean, against a mail clad oponent, a two handed swing with the "pizza paddle of doom" would probably wound the fellow, not from sharp cutting, but from blunt force trauma. Spoon shape and an interesting e-bay find

Browsing e-bay today, and found this spoon, which claims to be from byzantium, circa 12-13th cent. In my mind it looks like what I have in the cupboard right now. Any thoughts on whether it is likely authentic, and if so, how common? <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/R162-Medieval-Christian-bronze-spoon_...

Do an e-bay search for "whitney punch" look at the pictures, and choose one that has a russetted brown look and appears to be cast of metal, rather than formed of sheet. Brocades, habotai, satins, buckram, tafettas, probably jaquards as far as I can tell.

Duponi was, IIRC occasioanlly seen by merchant-class folks in italy, as its slubbed appearance was unappealing to the typical consumers of silk (the high rollers, as it were)

Obsidian is a glass. As such it has no crystaline structure, and doesnt suffer the limitation of crystaline materials (minimum angles of cleavage/fracture, minimum thickness, etc) like steel. Thus, if the angle and thickness are just right, it will break with a very thin edge. this phenomena is used...

well, I think it fits well into the SCA's fighting style- as we have accounts from the spaniards of Aztecs using Macana during skirmishes and decapitating horses with one blow- which means that it is one of the few weapons that might actually hit with sufficient force to cleave an armoured man's arm...
