In Ansteorra, in melee, if you are legged, you can drag yourself around. Slower than knee walking, but faster than not moving at all. In tourney, you cannot move, other than to briefly reposition.

Depends on if you do strange things to the shell before painting, mostly. You'd have to use a pretty strange paint to cause a problem for MOST helmets. But depending on the plastic in the helm and the kind of paint, it's theoretically possible to create a problem. It's just not very likely.

Couldn't agree more. We usually do it fully in armour, but that's likely because we usually do it at practice! If I may add to this slightly. I use the same technique. The only thing I do differently (or maybe this is obvious) is that Man1, the shield holder himself, should be wearing any armor that...

I'll grab this one too. LOL The basic thought is that you don't change your stance so your shield sits right to defend you, you hang your shield so that in your best stance, the sheild is correct. SO many folks are told "you just put the shield straps here and here on the back of the shield." This i...

I'll handle this one. LOL I'm one of Dunk's squires. Hammer Grip doesn't really refer to the fact that the sword rests in your palm like a hammer, but more specifically, refers to the fact that so many fighters grip the sword like they're holding on for dear life, gripping as tightly as possible. Yo...

While I knew this protocol change was coming and know that it's not just a specious news story, I agree, the lay person should not change to a new protocol until being trained in said protocol. It's tough. But he's quite correct, you significantly increase the damage you do to your shoulder by load bearing with your elbows higher than your shoulders. Look at the classic military press if you want a recipe for disaster. At least this is what my physical therapists and docs told me after I h...

Cultural question... Do you call holds during melees when you break or lose your own weapon normally? I can see calling hold when you see someone about to strike with say a spear that has it's head ripped off, but if it's your own weapon and you notice it, why don't you just quit hitting with it and...

I'm not sure if Corwin is being redundant or didn't read the thread, but the issue was never with the width of a chinstrap. The worry was that the SEM was going to, by fiat, change the ruling to require that all chin straps be basically hard-mounted to the helm. LOTS of people in the SCA have uses n...

I like to make French jokes. But the best comedy FIRST and FOREMOST has some element of HUMOR. "Never Trust the French" without any context other than a discussion about whether a legitimate businessman is trustworhty, isn't really very funny at all. She doesn't want to fight. She may not even WANT to want to fight. A large round rock at the top of a smooth hill represents a great deal of potential energy.
