I don't know about bag balm, but never, ever put tiger balm on an open wound. Mord. Or on a freshly shaved scrotum... Oh wait, what were we talking about again? Nice bruise. Welcome! I haven't had one like that in a while, but I'm sure after Sarnac reads my comment on the "ages" thread he'll be com...

Couldn't agree more. We usually do it fully in armour, but that's likely because we usually do it at practice! If I may add to this slightly. I use the same technique. The only thing I do differently (or maybe this is obvious) is that Man1, the shield holder himself, should be wearing any armor that...

I'll grab this one too. LOL The basic thought is that you don't change your stance so your shield sits right to defend you, you hang your shield so that in your best stance, the sheild is correct. SO many folks are told "you just put the shield straps here and here on the back of the shield." This i...

I'll handle this one. LOL I'm one of Dunk's squires. Hammer Grip doesn't really refer to the fact that the sword rests in your palm like a hammer, but more specifically, refers to the fact that so many fighters grip the sword like they're holding on for dear life, gripping as tightly as possible. Yo...

While I knew this protocol change was coming and know that it's not just a specious news story, I agree, the lay person should not change to a new protocol until being trained in said protocol. That being said, I'm trying to organize a new CPR training at my building asap, because we only have 2 CPR...

It's tough. But he's quite correct, you significantly increase the damage you do to your shoulder by load bearing with your elbows higher than your shoulders. Look at the classic military press if you want a recipe for disaster. At least this is what my physical therapists and docs told me after I h...

Cultural question... Do you call holds during melees when you break or lose your own weapon normally? I can see calling hold when you see someone about to strike with say a spear that has it's head ripped off, but if it's your own weapon and you notice it, why don't you just quit hitting with it and...

I'm not sure if Corwin is being redundant or didn't read the thread, but the issue was never with the width of a chinstrap. The worry was that the SEM was going to, by fiat, change the ruling to require that all chin straps be basically hard-mounted to the helm. LOTS of people in the SCA have uses n...

Not a workable solution. People might stumble and scrape the floor with metal armour. Better to protect the floor and fight as normal than to hope nobody falls on an expensive floor with armour that will damage it. Add to that the fact that knee fighting is a currently necessary evil, some folks do ...

I like to make French jokes. But the best comedy FIRST and FOREMOST has some element of HUMOR. "Never Trust the French" without any context other than a discussion about whether a legitimate businessman is trustworhty, isn't really very funny at all. Now, if this businessman was a swordmaker and the...

Nobody is advocating cutting her off and never speaking to her again. I'm sure every single person who's given "cut her loose" advise knows that Frieman would be considerate and open. However on your second statement.... You first say "she might want to do it" and then say "...but is afraid of getti...

I don't think losthelm is really advocating anything different. You might want to re-think that statement. They quite plainly tell their customers that their grill work is painted mild steel, so they know up front. Take it or leave it, but that's the product they sell. (It's actually part of the reason i didn't buy one of their helms, but hey, they make their de...

She doesn't want to fight. She may not even WANT to want to fight. A large round rock at the top of a smooth hill represents a great deal of potential energy. The sand grain on to top of a small ant hill has far less. (edit to put in the line that's important) Sometimes we're too close to something ...
