A bruise is an injury. A nasty bruise is starting to be a bad injury. Bad bruises can lead to a world of problems after a while. Never problems, bad circulation, scar tissue build up...and here I thought you didn't want anyone getting injured. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif Or are you ju...

Cheval...thanks for the input. Please know I wasn't championing the bowling ball, merely pointing out that it's results (albeit with the flaws you've described) are more repeatable and understandable than "it'd injure someone in armour" or "the force was transmitted through the armour" or any such d...

Syr Rhys, undeniable true. But the reality is that we currently have ZERO. No way at all to judge the blow. What we do is put someone in armour and hit them in a non-combat situation, and then fight with them and talk about blow calling. What Richard is asking for is a non-subjective method of writi...

Totally subjective. Who's reasonable? Who's the median of reasonable? Who's prudent? How prudent is TOO prudent? What's adequate armour? What armour is TOO adequate? What is "substantially?" Mind you, I don't disagree. But it's not a rule. I like the common sense approach, but I think that has been ...

A) Hjalmr made an attempt, but he didn't get any closer than the current rules. He merely substituted "sufficient" for "telling." B) Syr Rhys, I have finally to disagree with you. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif You stated, "Even the "hitting the bowling ball" test is artificial in that w...

Attn: James of the Marsh : Gauntlets
I tried to email you at the email listed in your profile, jvreeland@jimachine.com, but it bounced. Please email me, I'm interested in seeing a pic of your gauntlets...or if anyone else has pics, please send them to me. And of course, I still need James to get to me in case I'm interested. http://www...

Rhys, Rorik...the problem is that he's in the Middle kingdom. I believe their marshall handbook actually says to TAKE a shot if it's light but clean. At least that's what I saw being discussed on the Northshield list recently. Please, someone from Middle, correct me if I'm wrong. I went to DL the ma...

In my armet I'm a sucker for an underanded thrust. In an armet in the 15th and 16th century, I woulnd't have given a damn if you tried the same thrust with a real sword...it woulnd't do anything. In the SCA, I'm learning to not let that underhanded thrust get me. And I LIKE wearing a period visor. I...

I guess what I've been trying to say, Owen, is that we're not REALLY PUSHING per se. Contact, yes. WEll, frankly there woulnd't be contact if your sword arm wasn't up. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif Controlling. But not a hell of a lot of pushing. As Parlan said, a fine line. I believe we're in complete agreement. That'd what I'm talking about...my shield inside my opponents sword arm. But it's not just sitting there. I'm actively trying to control his sword hand. NEVER punching. Never "pushing the guy around." But if he starts to raise his sword, I'll push out or back (...

Excellent suggestion. Now, go to Pennsic and see how many archive people you can find wearing a little pewter pilgrim's badge. Look at all the people wearing hats and figure out which one has the right stuff in it. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif "Regular" heraldry is best for this. I've ...

I guess it's pretty hard to "tell" you want I mean by "push" in this instance. If I wanted to knock someone backwards, I could do that. I don't mean to suggest that we "push" that hard. It's when 2 fighters end up in that open stance that makes them both look like big cactuses...you know, arms up in...

Pole arms...gotta love 'em
Playing a little bear pit yesterday, and there were a couple high strung "jump the guy with the the pole arm" s/sh guys...I just love the look on their face when you're NOT running away and they're STILL not killing you. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif Just had to share. -----------------...

Here's the rule. It may be a slightly liberal interpretation of this rule that allows one to place their shield on the weapon arm of one's opponent and push to control the weapon, but the intent is pretty clear. The typo is actually in the rule book, so I included it. http://www.armourarchive.org/ub...
