Whereas the way some people go to their knees certainly can't be GOOD (IE, those who jump in the air and slam down onto the ground on their knees) I'd agree with Marvin. The problem is in the twisitng, turning, planting badly and all that. Look at knee injuries in football. Most joint injuries occur...

I'd say my experience is similar to Bob's. I fight often in my Sinric armet, usually with the period visor. I don't like fighting madu or sword/spear guys, because the underhand thrust is impossible to see. Otherwise, not a real problem. It IS tougher at night, tho. But when I go to the grilled viso...

Yes, there are a number of live steel folks who show up around here. As a rattan fighter, I'd only take exception with your statement that live steel is "more satisfying". Since the target areas are more limited and the speed/force must be reduced, I'd say that the satisfaction level is merely diffe...

That's exactly what I was getting at, and thank you very much for your input, Your Grace. If a knight candidate had to go 50/50 with you to get your vote, I don't think you'd be voting yes on TOO many of the people who've been knighted in our faire kingdom since you were admitted to the order. At th...

Aleric, the only aspect we were actually talking about was prowess. Usually these conversations start with "all other things being there..." That kind of thing. It seems to me to be the area where people get hung up in a manner that's tough to explain. If somone's a rat-bastard, it's easy to see tha...

Alcyoneus, I'm unfortunately referring to the idiot shieldmen who have over 1/2 their thigh exposed while in formation. I'm not saying shieldmen are idiots, I'm saying the ones who have 1/2 their leg hanging out exposed are. And they "cover" their exposure by blowing off shots to that limb, often. J...

It's nice to be IN Texas and not FROM Texas. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif Horns are legal in SCA combat, as long as they pass the other requirements. IE, they can't protrude more than something like 1/2 inch into a 1" opening. So a deer antler would likely be OUT. Too easy to go throug...

I tell you what tho. I've virtually NEVER had someone take a thigh shot with a spear. edit: I thought I'd read in the rules somewhere that you're supposed to take the shots taking into effect the fact that different weapons hit differently. It's like having to put clackers on a mace to get people to...

All I'm suggesting is that it would be more fair over a period of time if there was a baseline and the knights judged a candidate on that baseline (IE, this is what a knight's prowess should be at entrance to the order) rather than judging them against current average. Allow a wild example. Let's sa...

Duc, you were fine. And it was nice to meet you, btw. The issue here is in large battles or more specifically congested areas. Let me use a battle you're familiar with to give you an example..from Bordermarch. Let's say you were in the door of the castle trying to push through to get in the castle. ...

Good gentles, thanks for your replies. I know that what we're trying to do is put quantitative parameters on qualitiative issues, but it's hard to talk about it in purely philosophical terms without getting frustrated. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif So we try. Asbjorn, I'd say that if a melee is just a big tourney, that still a fighter who's a spear god but isn't all that hot with other weapons is still not a knight. "The candidate must be considered the equal of his perspective peers with the basic weapons of tournament combat." weaponS. Plural. But if h...

Weapons proficiency to be knighted in the SCA
Corpora says "The candidate must be considered the equal of his perspective peers with the basic weapons of tournament combat." Now, that leads to another interesting question for the chiv, IMHO. Does that mean that one has to be competitive with the worst of the chiv examples in each weapon form? h...

So here's my take on it. If the person is OK with all weapons forms but is a spear GOD in melee, I'd say no. That's simply not enough. If they're a sword and shield GOD in melee, but can't fight in a tourney, still no. If they're a god in every way shape and form in melee, they can pick up any weapo...

I love spear dueling. I enjoy spear in war. I hate 12 foot spears. I think that 9 is just fine to be a differnece from the 7.5 poles. 9 allows a decent mixture of weapons. I woulnd't mind at all melees that didn't allow 2 handed weapons. I think a weapon/shield melee would be an absolute blast, fran...

The other issue with Calidan's theory is that if they put it there to protect because the metal was thin, why wouldn't they just use the metal from the rondel to make the metal from the helm thicker. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif IE, use more metal to start the raising process? I still ...

WMA: Which kingdom is that? That's a pretty hardline stance, I'd think. I mean, a LOT of folks are using leather over padding. Stoffel: Your problem with SCA combat is more a semantic one than a real one. It's not YOUR fault, however. I don't WANT to get hit with a shot that's hard enough to KILL me through our supposed armour standard. I don't think too many people do. That's why we've chosed to refer to the shots that we ...

Sheesh. My shield gets beat on plenty, and no deformations yet. I've seen aluminium shields that were lots older than mine with no deformity.
