Whereas the way some people go to their knees certainly can't be GOOD (IE, those who jump in the air and slam down onto the ground on their knees) I'd agree with Marvin. The problem is in the twisitng, turning, planting badly and all that. Look at knee injuries in football. Most joint injuries occur...

I'd say my experience is similar to Bob's. I fight often in my Sinric armet, usually with the period visor. I don't like fighting madu or sword/spear guys, because the underhand thrust is impossible to see. Otherwise, not a real problem. It IS tougher at night, tho. But when I go to the grilled viso...

I think the only RULE about non-rivets in armour contstruction involve the helm, where screws and nuts and chicago screws and quick rivets are forbidden. But I don't think there are any rules against their use in body armour. I could be wrong.

Yes, there are a number of live steel folks who show up around here. As a rattan fighter, I'd only take exception with your statement that live steel is "more satisfying". Since the target areas are more limited and the speed/force must be reduced, I'd say that the satisfaction level is merely diffe...

Alcyoneus, I'm unfortunately referring to the idiot shieldmen who have over 1/2 their thigh exposed while in formation. I'm not saying shieldmen are idiots, I'm saying the ones who have 1/2 their leg hanging out exposed are. And they "cover" their exposure by blowing off shots to that limb, often. J...

I tell you what tho. I've virtually NEVER had someone take a thigh shot with a spear. edit: I thought I'd read in the rules somewhere that you're supposed to take the shots taking into effect the fact that different weapons hit differently. All I'm suggesting is that it would be more fair over a period of time if there was a baseline and the knights judged a candidate on that baseline (IE, this is what a knight's prowess should be at entrance to the order) rather than judging them against current average. Weapons proficiency to be knighted in the SCA

Corpora says "The candidate must be considered the equal of his perspective peers with the basic weapons of tournament combat." Now, that leads to another interesting question for the chiv, IMHO. Does that mean that one has to be competitive with the worst of the chiv examples in each weapon form? h...

So here's my take on it. If the person is OK with all weapons forms but is a spear GOD in melee, I'd say no. That's simply not enough. If they're a sword and shield GOD in melee, but can't fight in a tourney, still no. If they're a god in every way shape and form in melee, they can pick up any weapo...

Dalewyn, can you tell me where you've read that "rigid material" is 18 gauge or equivelant? I've read lots of marshall handbooks, and I've never seen that. I've only seen "rigid material" or "hard over soft." I'm NOT trying to be an ass, I'm VERY curious if that rule ACTUALLY exists somewhere.
