The point is very simple. The requierment of steel thickness is ONLY for those areas where steel is required. Or more specifically, the areas where we require "hard over soft"...knees, elbows, neck. If you're wearing thigh protection, the SCA doesn't give a damn if you wear 30 gague. it's gonna look...
