Seriously, the support and high praise that I have recieved over this project has been overwhelming! I'm very honored by all of you...

Almost finished! Just need to clean up some of the dishing marks, then polish and buff. The strapping will be on hold until I get feed back from the museum. <IMG src=...

While the piece is bake drying, I thought I would post pics of the shaped piece. The pictures don't show it very well, but notice that most of the detail of the tooling stayed crisp. This first picture shows the dishing form and dish...

Personally, I think the guy that suggested that the embossing tools supplied the heat was full of it, though admittedly I haven't tried it. (I doubt that he did, either.) I would think that the heat applied during embossing would distort the pattern. I'm not sure if Mr. Blaire attempted this techni...

Shaping and hardening pics will be posted sometime tomorrow/later today. I am holding off on strapping the piece until I get word back from the British Museum on some questions I have. The final sealing will be done by buffing out natural animal fat on the piece. This will polish it as well as seal ...

Cathal, 1500 century Ireland would be wearing late 14th century English, or 15th century imported stuff. By this time in Ireland's history, the only folks that had armour of any note were British Nobles who were at war with the Irish. There is nothing indegenous to Ireland of that time period that I...

It was great to meet quite a few archivers this weekend! For those of you that were able to attend Atlantia's 12th Night, the piece was displayed as a work in progress in the A&S display. I hope you had the chance to go see it. I am currently finishing up the research on some hardening and shaping t...

what kind of a blade are you using in your swivel knife ullieag? i use a ruby blade angled, amd trying to find a straight one I am using a 3/8" straight steel blade. I also use a 3/8" angled ceramic blade, I love them both. The angled blade works very well on very tight curves and such, the straigh...

Chef, I didn't say that they didn't use cheese glue. The more I read this thread, the more inclined I am to think so. Whatever kind of sizing they used in cuir bouilli, if any, should be able to withstand the elements. No sense in wearing something that got soggy and tacky in the rain! I was answeri...

No idea, just that it does not seem to be the case in Theophilus, I am not questioning whether they did or didn't just the absence of that in Divers Arts. The cheese glue is 'waterproof' without cooking but again I don't know regarding it being cooked. I would ask why they would want to waterproof ...

I even found documentation on what the little beasties are supposed to be, in the article written be A.V. Norman. Now the question is Uilleag are you going to add the gold leaf to it? It wouls look awesome. Luckily, there is no evidence of gold leafing on this particular piece, so as a reproduction, I will not. I'm still playing with different techniques for applying leaf to my projects. There are some documen...
