Jason, I didn't know about the maille. Thanks. The helms are really cool too, but I knew that they had some helms, I just didn't know they had worked iron, I thought that that skill was imported. You taught me something new today, thank you very much. Could you email me your referance sources, so I ...

Vladimir, The young man in question purposely insulted someone on the "off-topics" forum, just prior to posting his question here. Quite a few people read it and were a little put off by his unfortunate attitude. I agree that we should try to be more helpful, but...... One should avoid being an ass ...

Now, now, Josh. I admit the young man's posts are abrasive, but no need to threaten the lad. It goes against the grain of what we are trying to portray with our fighting. Fighting in the SCA, should be for the joy of combat, not for beating up on someone without a clue. I know my remarks sound snide...

The design I used in this tutorial is the GAA design. I am working on a 10 pair consignment for him, should have it done by tomorrow. Trying to get done a few days early, so I can get caught up on everything else.... While I was still living in GA we had a total of 2 or 3 pair of the old stiched des...

Branmor, This is a huge question. One that can best be answered by writing up another tutorial on the process. When I'm finished with my current project I will write one up. I would start by purchasing a beginner's tooling set from the Leather Factory. (Or any other leather craft store) and a starte...

Day three - Steps 10 - 17 Step 10 ) Marking/punching holes for assembly/shaping First to go over the tools for this step. I use my drill, block and a stylis to mark where the holes need to go. Pull the punched portion of the elbow cop over the portion that hasn't been punched yet. Line the edges up...

If you are looking at before St. Patrick came to Ireland or even before Christianity spread out of Rome, circa 400 AD and before, you will find that the gaelic people didn't have armour as a culture. They wore what thier adversaries wore, or may be a iron cap with a shield. If you are looking for 40...

Looks like your dyed the backside of your pieces as well. do you have any problems with the dye bleeding off onto clothes? Or do you seal the backside? Actually Irish, I just dyed the grain side and the edges. Some dye will bleed onto the flesh side of the leather, but not much. No, generally I do ...

Day 2, Steps 6 - 9 Step 6) Oblong strap punching I do this step directly following the soaking process because the leather is nice and plyable and the oblong punch can go through the leather easier, hence it doesn't over work the tool. The punch can be purchased through any leather craft store. I r...

Gavin, If you read the second paragraph that you quoted, you will read that I soak the leather in in room temprature water. For tooling or embossing, I just "case" it, (just get it damp) For armouring purposes, I thouroughly saturate it for a couple of reasons. One it stays wet longer and all of the...

The full leather gauntlets may have been purchased through GAA Armouries, but I would wager that they were made by House of the Wolf Leather. I sell a lot of my products through GAA, or I used to when I lived down the street from him. I now do his munitions grade leather work, or table stock as a co...

Bauzuband Tutorial Finished!(steps 18-21 now posted)
Greetings all! Here is the beginning! Day 1, steps 1 - 5. Step 1) Leather selection There are no pics for this portion, because there are many different types of leather and laying them all out would be cost prohibitive. The main consideration when making armour is what hardening process are you goi...

Leather armour safety tip.....NEVER cut out leather with a jig saw.....in your lap! No I haven't done this, just sayin..... Utility razors and my fingers have this thing though..... Halbreds, that's a great idea for drilling rivet holes in leather too! That and use a wood block under the piece for a...

Halbreds helm
I was just purusing the AoM forum and I have to say I love the way your salt shaker helm came out! My Squire Brother is in the process of making one, I bet that he is drooling over the pics of that helm! Truly beautiful work. I love the way the bluing turned out and the brass accents the lines gorge...

Hey brother! Those arms that you showed are a reproduction of early 14th century, English. That style and splinted legs / arms were very popular in Spain and Italy in the 14th - early 15th centuries. Tooled leather cuirasses were also popular in that time period. I have Chris's article, I will be br...

I appriciate your catching that. I reread it 3 or 4 times before I posted it, and I still didn't find it. My spelling is abysmal and my html editor doesn't have spell check. I used to type with a dictionary next to the 'puter....think I need to start doing that again. I fixed it, by the way! Thanks ...

That's really nice, Uilleag. I have a question for you. How do you keep the leather armour from rotting twisting, and deforming? Every shaped leather bit I've ever had wound up getting squished, acquired a funny smell, stretched on one side more than another, etc.. Is it the way I store it? Lack of...
