Willing Pell, David said something about an articulating elbow in these bauzubands but the picture you posted doesn't show anything like that. Are the elbows articulated, and if so how did you do that? I've been working on a design to allow that kind of articulation, but I haven't been able to come ...

Uilleag, are you dyeing the leather white yourself? They look great! If so, with what dye type? I've heard that white is notoriously hard to work with but you seem to have got it spot on ... Wow! Very Showy! How do you dish leather? I've hand-shaped, but was unaware you could use other techniques. I'm interested in replacing my elbow cops with bazubands because I can't get my cops to stay securely. They aren't going to go with my 14th C kit, but they would be under my gambeson.... Well...

Hi all, I have already posted pics of my latest work, so please forgive me for posting them again, but they came out nicely, I think and would like to use them as advertising. <IMG src="http://houseofthewolf.com/pics/barusbauzubands1.jpg"> I still have commission slots available. David, First off thanks for the kind words on my work for you. I'm sorry that they don't seem to be working out for you though. The idea of an articulating elbow on low profile bauzubands intruiges me. I played with the concept myself and never came up with something that works for me. If anyone has...

Tooled Bauzubands (Pics)
I wanted to share my latest work with you all. I cased them in water, tooled them, shaped them using a dishing hammer and dishing form, then heat treated them in the oven. I then painted them and treated them with acrylic. Not necessarily a period finishing technique, but the paint will hold up a li...

The female body armour is very comfortable, but the coat of plates is as well, mobility is about the same in both, it really depends on the look you are going for.

Cossack, I have to agree with Maelgwyn here. This gets discussed exhaustively in this forum and others. I highly recommend a search for leather armour, leather hardening, cuirbuoli, etc. This will pull up tons of info, and then you will have a more knowledge based platform to ask technique questions...

I think that Chef de Chambre and myself have brought this discussion full circle. We are finally back to why most Irish/Scottish/Pictish personas are done badly. Chef, I think we are communicating a lot of the same thing but using a different vocabulary. I have been making leather armour for about 20 years, I have never produced an "untreated" piece of leather and called it armour. I used to mistakenly use wax to harden my pieces, I have since gone to water ...

There are existing pieces of tooled leather armour, as has been pointed out earlier in this thread. Uilleag, (How is that pronounced btw,... Willy?) Have you considered wearing your kidney belt under your hauberk? You have Mail, few things look better than a full mail hauberk, it seems a pity to break it up with a big kidney belt over top. If the mail needs to be belted for support, how about a t...

I really appriciate all of the comments that have come my way on this thread. Even the criticisms have been constructive. I have been giving a lot of thought, and more importantly research to the subject. The bottom line is this, I will be making compromises in my kit for safety and SCA conventions....

It's more of a comfort issue, IMO. Most of the examples of these type show the splints on the outside, but having the splints on the inside could be done. I would recomend lining them though, to keep the splints from rubbing directly on your arm. You will have to adjust your padding to allow for the...

Actually the piece I am speaking of is a rebrace or upper cannon and it is dated late 1200's or maybe early 13's, I will have to look it up when I get home. It was tooled. The main design was stamped out and embossed, with the background being stamped in with a kind of shader....not sure of the term...

No, I haven't been scared off, I'm out of town on business and away from my books and research, so I can't answer the questions. I do know that tooled leather armour existed in period. Being a speed fight style sniper, I will say to you that finding holes should not be the problem. Evertime a fighter moves, something opens up, the trick is staying alive long enough to find it and take advantage of it. Hamish, your defense seems solid enough, but you will get "itchy" and strike bef...

Re: Fighting Kits
My question was more along the lines of SCA fighting kits. I wouldn't mind being slightly more period as long as I'm still protected from SCA combat. Perhaps period-ish would be more accurate. I don't mind a few discrepancies. Just hoping for some pictures to see what others are doing. Any Celts/Ir...

Minimal armour has its advantages, you can move faster and have more flexability. Its really popular in hotter climates, Trimaris, Meridies, Ansetora, Aetenveldt, etc. So much so that it has become a cultural thing... Of course the disadvantage is it hurts like hell when you get hit. It boils down t...
