Re: splinted cuisses
See this knights cuisses? m I want to make some just like them. Anyone have advice, tips, patterns, etc? Thanks, audax That is Sir Andrew Grey, of Atlantia. I *think* those are actually covered ABS with decorative rivets to make it look splinted... That's exactly what they are. I do the same thing ...

vambrace and greaves progress pics (day 4)
Greetings all, I've run into a string of commissions that require tooling, and I thought I would share the progress on a few of them. Today I have finished up the tooling on one of a pair of vambraces. The pair will match, and there will also be a pair of shynbalds to go with these with a similar to...

I think that if he wants to wear this armour and use it in any type of combat, this experience should be less than successful. This sounds harsh, but there is a reason armour was designed the way it was. It functioned, it fit comfortable for long periods of time and protected the person wearing it. ...

Hal, I dished the leather the same way I dished the steel. I cut out the cop and then soaked it in water. A word about that - wet leather is just a nasty, nasty thing. Cold, slimey, icky. Anyway, once it dried a little I lined my dishing form with a thin scrap of leather and just dished it in that....

Today we did the fitting with Athena and her peytral to insure that the pattern and shaping was done correctly, and to lay out where the straps need to be placed. <IMG src="http://www.houseofthewolf.com/progresspics/mepeytral11.jpg"> <IMG src="http://www.houseofthewolf.com/progresspics/mepeytral12.j...

Cat, I am impressed! Want a job? LOL Seriously, very nice work on the shaping of the uppers. I can see only one small wrinkle, and for a first project, that is fantastic! You definately seem to have the correct patterning to get the lames to line up correctly, and not be over or under sized. Your ed...

Windrose Review (Norman Conical w/ mail drape)
In late January, early February I contacted John at Windrose Armoury about a norman conical. We had a great conversation and we talked through what it is that I wanted, based off of what I saw on his website. We decided on a norman conical, with a swept back nasal, all done in stainless steel with a...

That will look nice! how are the "plates" going to be attatched to each other? Also looking at your inspiration museum piece, do you have any idea how they put those deep shoulder bowls in the front of the piece? I was wondering if there is any precedent for press forming the pieces? Makes me wish ...

Here is today's progress so far. The shaping on the right flank is finished until the final fitting this weekend. The pictures don't pic it up very well, it is rather subtle, but I think that I have followed the notes on the design fairly accurately. I will know for sure this week end. The design ha...

This afternoon's progress: I transfered the embossing pattern onto the two flank pieces of the peytral. Then I finished embossing the right flank. I then died that piece and began the shaping. It will need to case a bit longer, with deeper moisture penetration throughout the leather, but the surface...

I have started work on a very interesting project, a 3 - piece cuir bouilli peytral. The piece will be used in the semi-professional jousting circuit and at some local Ren Faires. The inspiration comes from the cuir bouilli barding currently on display at the MET. The first picture was taken by the ...

Anyone wondering about Dan's gauntlets, they are da bomb. I know one guy around here who has a pair that have seen a LOT of service, and they still rock. Tim, As much as I would love to add the new techniques to the tutorials section, I don't that I will be considering it anytime soon. The techniques have already been discussed on the armour construction board, but I don't think I want to add it it to a permanent site like my tutorials. Quite frankly...

I haven't finished the testing phase of the polyens and couters yet. Re: dishing
Dishing... I'm still working on getting the hang of that. It seems that I need to dish deeper than I think I need to in order for the dish to come out right. The gorget is a good example. I did some dishing to the rear half right about where it sits over the vertebrae but I think I could have dishe...

If the shield is going to be for regular use in the SCA, then I would suggest just arcyllic paint and spray on acryllic finish, sold at most leather craft stores. If this is going to be for special Pas' and tournies I would suggest coating the leather with gesso, then painting it with oil based pain...
