Robin, you are coming between me and my need to expand my business. I have been fairly out bid, you are lucky that I cannot really afford to go higher, because if I could I would bid $100.00 and buy it directly. As it is, I am out of the running. Halberds, How much would you charge if I was to commi...

Uilleag, I've been following this project along with one of my cuirboulli(ed) pieces of armour (my kidney belt) minus the Hide glue as I was a bit apprehensive over it's sealing properties ( I use it to gesso my canvas and wood panels for paintings). How long are you soaking these pieces in the lin...

I finished soaking the polyen in Linseed oil, and it has left an even coating throughout the piece. I need to let it completely dry before I can assess how much harder it will become, but I am now convinced that the hide glue would have only been applied to the front of the piece to prepare it for f...

Hide glue was often used as a base over pourous materials to prepare it for painting, as was gesso. Gesso was used extensively to paint wood pannels and such. I found that the leedoil will soak through from the back and given enough saturation will coat more evenly. The paints that would have been u...

Well, I discovered that applying the hide glue before the linseed oil doesn't work very well. The oil will not saturate evenly because the hide glue seal the pours of the leather. The finish becomes blotchy. The leather is still rigid, but it just has uneven finish. I will probably end up making ano...

Re: Today's progress
I realize that its a lot of work for an experiment, but my suggestion would be to do another one with slightly deeper dishing, particularly along the sides, and then soak it for 20-30 minutes in warm hide glue.
Well, studying the original, as per the effigy and the origianl...

Today's progress
Greetings all. I finished applying the hide glue this morning and allowed it to bake into the leather at 180 degrees for about 30 minutes or so. The hide glue darkened the piece a little as well as gave it a bit of a satin sheen. It did help the hardening process somewhat, but its still not quite as...

The trick with leather, is that once it is wet, the material will hold its shape, if it is trained to it. It will need to be hammer formed or allowed to dry on a last of some sort. Since you are currently saving up to buy dishing forms, I would suggest allowing the leather to dry on your leg until i...

The shape doesn't seem as if they flow. They seem to be a bit blocky. They will definately be functional, but if you look at your pattern, see how you can get the curves to flow into one another. The ankles seem to flair out. I used to have this same problem. I fixed it by attaching straps that will...

I actually found the recipe as well, and converted the large sizes down. I am trying 1 1/3 cup of water to 1 tblspn of sizing. This will be used to harden leather as part of the baking process. Thanks for the info! It will be sitting throughour the day, if I have the energy after fighter practice to...

Looking for literature
I have some copies of the Sir Fitzralph effigy, as well as the artist's interpretation of this harness, but I am looking for any written research on this particular harness. I am looking for specific reference to the polyens. How they were constructed, materials thought to have been used etc. My lib...

rabbit / hide glue recipe (x-post)
Greetings all, Once upon a time, I printed off the recipe that was posted here, but now I can't find it. I've tried a search for the thread and can't seem to find it through all of the matches that came up. If anyone has it handy, or can just recite the recipe from memory, that would be great. I don...

Depending on how the hardening process works, these would be very easy to adapt to SCA legal knees. All that is needed would be to lengthen the sides to insure proper coverage as per the rules and to gentle the flare on the bottom to allow taking a knee without damaging the knee cop. Of course, coun...

This is the same technique I use for leather lames on leather cops. I would be concerned about using leather with steel, because over time, the leather will soften and you will have binding and gaping issues. Properly maintained, (i.e.: re-hardening the leather as needed), should make it viable, but...

Here is today's progress. I believe that I have copied the shape of the artist's representation almost exactly. I extended the bottom flair, dished the center of the cop a little deeper, and worked the dish around to the sides so that it all flows in a little better. I worked the fluting into the ce...

Wolf- you're probably WAY more into leather than I am, but I've been reading the Museum of London book on Knives and Scabbards. There's a ton of info in it on leather embossing and scribing they found in the London finds, many of which are 14th century. They speculate a bit about how the different ...

As you can see form the bottom view picture, the side walls are bowed and should resist side compression fairly well. Especially because it is very rare for both sides of a polyen to get hit simultaneously. This piece will be bake hardened as well as hide glued, with the over all piece sealed with a...

This piece is highly embossed and the artist's interpretation has it guilded as well. For now, I just wanted to make sure that I could get the shaping correct. A future project later this spring will be another prototype that will be embossed and painted so I can get an idea of what the finished pro...

Fitzralph Effigy reproduction (Finished for now)
Greetings all, The pics I am posting is a prototype of a 14c cuir bouilli polyen. I am using the artist's interpretation based on the brass of the effigy of Fitzralph. I did not bother with any of the embossing or guilding on this model, I wanted to see if I could get the shaping correct. <IMG src="...

I would love to extend the bidding to accomodate different time zones, but the reason for the auction was to raise immediate funds and the one week delay is all I can afford to wait.
