The problem with that idea is mobility of the hand on the hilt of the weapon. It has been tried before, but nothing with acceptable results for the type of fighting that we do in the SCA. An interesting project, but it seems to be too combersome without the flexibility.....If you come up with a desi...

Nice looking work; I posted your website over on the SwordMaiden forum. A couple ladies were asking about where to find someone who makes C-belts. I recommended yours. I especially like the (what I am calling) "Pissed off Dolphin" bauzabands. Do you mind if I save the pic you have of my leg armor? ...

Benalishlancer is onto something....I use the intials of my client's modern name to distinguish the picture files, however, it was not Michael Bolton who ordered that gorget. WBF, I tempt folks with my work, so that I can earn a living. However, if you will look and compare my prices, I'm not all th...

Konstantin, Thanks for the tips! I put the shoe polish on after the oil right? Just checking. About how long will it take for the leather to cure after I have put on the oil? Once I make the collar, it will be about a week before I will be ready to sew it on. Will that be enough time? Will there be...

A shapened stylus? You mean like a modeling spoon with a sort of cutting edge on it? So you're not using a swivel knife and a hammered tool (like a beveler) on this one? Christopher I always wanted to see a cased greave in leather The stylis isn't for cutting so much as for leaving an impression in...

Raising leather is done with the same principals as raising steel. It doesn't react exactly the same, it doesn't shrink back on itself. What metal is doing during that process, is the metal's molecular structure is actually moving, leather doesn't do that. It is an organic material, heat will make i...

No problem. I will hinge them and wait on the buckles. May I suggest Talbot's Fine Accessories? He has some really nice 14c buckles that run about $3.00 each. They are for 1/2" straps and I think that they will work really well for this project. Of course Raymond's Quiet Press and a bunch of other v...

Man, my legs look fat! Can't wait to see them... Remember, they have to fit over your ankle braces and sweat pants.....that increased the size by 1 1/8"....so yeah, they do look big, but we'll see how they fit soon. Very nice! I'll be interested how the edges match up. I have a hard enough time with steel-and it stays where I smack it! Gonna overlap or butt the two halves? Actually, with the casing I use for extensive tooling like this, the leather does not get entirely saturated, so when I shape it, it stays ...

cuir bouilli cased greave (day 2)
Greetings all, Several years ago I was challenged to make a cased greave from leather and then to cuir bouilli it. At the time the task was very daunting and I passed on it until I better understood both the hardening process for leathers and different shaping techniques. Recently, I was commissione...

Re: Question for those that wear mail [SCA]
:?: If your primary protection for SCA combat is mail; 1. How protective is it? 2. What other protective equipment do you wear? 1. Not very, but it takes a lot of the "slap" out of tippy or glanced blows. 2. I wear a padded gambeson underneath, 3/4 cuirboulli arms, a kidney belt under the gambeson,...

Dan, beautiful pieces. I noticed on the greaves I got from you that they have a bit of a pinch at the top. What should I do to avoid this? Just add some type of padding, perhaps? -Gregory- Actually, what I had to do was modify the pattern. Let me guess, it is pinching on the inside of your thigh, w...
