There is an excellent summary of this period by Christopher Snyder at http://the-orb.net/encyclop/early/origi ... essay.html The bibliography at the end includes many of my favorite sources and many more that I haven't read...yet. :D

For a nice chronology with many sources cited, see http://members.aol.com/michellezi/timel ... icage.html

Not entirely true in Britain, where the legions revolted in 406 and then left for Gaul in 407, never to return. Those troops were defeated in 410 by troops loyal to Emperor Honorius but he declined to send them back to Britain, possibly due to the Vandal problem in Italy and the Alans, Alemani, Fran...

...And I would slightly alter Maelgwyn's analogy to a somewhat more Medieval tone: "If I have drunk the baron's mead (or preferrably some fine Cypriot wine) in celebration of our contract in which I will receive ten pounds gold annually as rents from lands in Lombardy, I will be obligated to serve ...

How about Late Romano British / Saxon =) Maybe eventually a Rus one as well. Duncan Maybe we should just start the Romano-Brit thread here and let JT move it over if he feels like it. I've asked a couple of times about starting a Romano British topic in the "I wanna be" forum but gotten no reply.

The most common howler I see is someone posting scans from a book (particularly images) on a website, and "invoking the fair use clause". Now, I'm no expert on copyright, but I'd be really surprised if that's what the "Fair Use" clause actually permits! It was my understanding that it permits anyon...

I had thought the current usage was "locking scale" for scales attached to a backing but wired together in rows and "lamellar" for scales or lamellae attached to each other so that no backing is needed. I would call these locking scale : http://www.carlislemillenniumdig.co.uk/images/armourscales.jpg...

See m for a very brief summary of european use of lamellar. As for the true nature of carolingian scale, we would need better physical evidence to be sure. It is conventional to assume that if the scales in an image point up then it is lamellar and if they point down it is scale, but there is really...

An excellent question! Here are some guesses: 1. None. Sleep in the open or commandeer a barn/house/villa. 2. Use a traditional Roman military tent, a wall tent made of goatskin rectangles sewn together. 3. Use a tent in the form of a Roman wall tent but made of canvas. Many U.S. civil war tents fit...

1st, that is a nice kit and an excellent way to plan, using a variety of contemporary effigies. Done in hardened steel it should be light and protective. ...I also realize the helm material may be pushing it, but the helm will be strong enough I agree 100%. and with a full visor it should have almos...
