Fever making me weak...I's a wuss, it's official, until I'm over this. Nope, you're just sick. When the mind is willing but the body refuses, that's life. Rest and heal. When the body is able but the mind wants to watch TV/play computer games/sleep late, then we see who is the wuss/slacker/wastrel/...

It sounds like what you are saying, essentially, is that a title that is open to everyone who has an AoA has been appropriated for the White Scarves in your Kingdom Yes, I would agree that that has been the practical effect of a decision the Ansteorran crown made about 25 years ago. - effectively g...

I suspect they would give up after about the 5000th time someone asked "Are you a white scarf?" Heralds would politely explain why it was allowed but unconventional, every single time the title was used. Their new last name would become "I'mnotawhitescarfI'mjustaSpaniard". Clueless gits would try to...

I was coping with too much congestion for my morning aerobic workouts this week. Tuesday we had great weather for practice and I worked some with Uther, Lucius and Giotto, focusing on moving through range rather than standing in range. I did get in a good strength workout on Wednesday: 40 hindu squa...

Only a pirate thread could get hijacked in so many different directions. The article did not show a date, though I looked closely for one. I do know that in 1982 when I began playing in Ansteorra the custom of using the title "Don" for the Companions to the Order of the White Scarf was already stron...

Quoting a message I found online: Greetings from Arval! In his 21 December letter to the College of Arms, Master Da'ud ibn Auda, Laurel King of Arms, announced a re-definition of Don and Donna as equivalent to Lord and Lady. A little background. Corpora strictly forbids the use of any title of rank ...

'Though it pains me to disagree with my friend and colleague Jehan, I will take another position on this matter. On the issue of padding or suspension, several of us have posted repeatedly on the evils of foam and the desireability of a linen liner stuffed with natural materials. A quick search of the forum will provide a wealth of information on this topic. I understand how a suspension liner protects from ve...

(SCA) weight and padding of helmets
Continued from "weight of helmets" topic: Weights of SCA helmets are typically 1/3 heavier, to almost double the weight of originals, for two factors 1. a desire not to have the helmet beaten up in recreational combat, and 2. a belief current that heavier helmets are less likely to lead to concussio...

There have to be at least three different kinds of demos: "This is the SCA...come and play" For a recruiting demo it is more important to show people having fun than to try to create a false impression of uniform historical accuracy. Showing both the person in top-notch armour and the guy in a t-tun...

When I replaced my 16g shield boss with one of 22g hardened steel it cut the weight to a little less than half. (17.5 oz to 8 oz). For your CoP that might mean 10 lbs instead of 20 after allowing for the weight of the fabric and nails. Are your legs attached to an arming pourpoint? If so, does it fi...

Hmm. My shield always seems to be a work in progress. At the moment I have a 24x36 center-grip oval with 2 layers of 1/4 inch birch plywood, edged with aluminum u-channel, rope, and rawhide strips. The rawhide is attached with clinched nails but I want to re-attach it by drilling tiny holes every 1....

Would it be cost-effective to offer this same design with more holes for use in lamellar? Of course a determined person could drill added holes. 20g stainless seems ideal...perhaps with tinned and bronzed options? I know the Romans used some bronzed iron scales and it would certainly be lighter than...

Sorry for being a pitbull on this issue, but the SCA does not need more Hollywood pirates. A few more well-researched, well-executed Elizabethan (pre 1600)courtiers turned seadog/privateer/adventureres would be a welcome addition, methinks. Hear! Hear! Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth has need of loyal...

Angus, there is a world of difference between the handfull of stakes designed for a plumbing fixture base that Halberds offers (I own some of his and made some myself) and the wide array of specialized stakes a professional armourer uses, all designed to work with a hardie hole or stake plate. Maste...

My theory, guaranteed to be worth what you paid for it: Sarmatians and other Iranian-language steppes tribes had extensive contact with Celts from circa 500 BC to circa 700 AD and extensive contact with both China and the Hun/Mongol cultures.
