Suppoe it might be small? you make it sound like they were only large hefty items used for shooting from. If you use the german term Setztarsche for the larger pavise and handtartsche for the hand held ones, things begin to make sense. Setztartsche or sitting shield and handtartsche, hand shield.

Admittedly, they weren't much bigger, but still a mounted knight using a pavise, which was the point i was trying to put across.

I have to say, your assumption that pavises weren't used on horseback is, i believe, unfounded. There are illustrations of riders having pavises attached in a similar manner to the bouche shield used in jousting. There is a pavise of exactly the same shape and style present in the British Museum. i'...

well i'm clearly not working hard enough if pavises go unknown about the archive. I have a table which documents sizes thought it is extremely rough and i have much left to add to it. as to dropping the shield when the fighting came in closer. As the article says and i would have said, strap and buckle an inch above the wrist will (and did) work fine for holding the vambrace together.

well, it could be a smaller version of an extant pavise that is basically just two pieces of wood mitred and in the shape of an oval.
