If you want to keep the cost down you might want to contact Zweihammer for a kit. last i checked all the pieces were cut out and deburred and cost $40, thats a saving of about $260

Andrew that is great, i've heard of cromwell but not buck and hitman. thanks you're a star. People post place sin the US but forget i'm in the UK and shipping is a lot for whitneys and other stuff like that, plus i'm on a tight budget of what i can scrounge as per usual.

i've actually moded a pair of side cutters, i ground jaw right back to leave a few mm of blade, this produces excellent leverage and relatively decent rings. i mananged to cut about 500 in 10mins.

i just got treasures og great britian from my school library, it wa sonly 5p so i couldn't help myself. i also got master builders of the medieval ages which is a lot more boring than i thought it would be. also the christies armour catalogue of 2001, some really nice pieces in there.

Whitney punch dies.

I am planning on buying this type of punch off of a friend but it only has an 8mm die for it. Does anyone know anywhere in the UK i can get replacement dies. The ones from Whitney are extortionately(sp?) expensive.

I've read that hyrochloric acid bring sout the pattern very nicely, use baking soda to neutralise it afterwards.

I have some wiss snips but when i've tried to cut rings in the past i've founf the blades seperate and the ring gets lodged inbetween them.

Maybe it's time i got some new cutters then, i find after about 50 rings my hands start to hurt. These are the kind of cutters i use http://www.mytoolstore.com/chnnlock/148-10.jpg I've always wanted to do riveted but i don't have the tools for it. It's 14g wire by the way.

I got my fire bright red last night and all worked perfectly, it certainly beats constantly watching them in the forge. These aren't for riveted maille, i just find it easier to cut them when they are normalized. Once i have my maille shirt done what is the best way to get them to their original har...

Sheep, boil a new sheepskin in water and scoop the oily stuff off of the top and spread on tent. It's called lanolin and is what stops sheep from shriking when it rains :D. Alternatively you could buy stuff called rolantech from here http://www.rolexlanolin.com/. glad to be of assistance.

Mild might be cheap but the galvy is free. i have 5 spools of ceiling wire. when i normalise my springs it leaves a nice oatmeal type colour that looks very good.

It was only an idea, looks like i'm welding up a box for the forge then, i hate having to put my rings in the forge cos the coke dust bruns onto the surface. my forge is outside BTW

I'd varnish the inside of the box and close it witha tight fitting lid, i'd probably oil the steel with some spray on stuff.

nearly all the brig plates are different sizes, i would say a 4x4' sheetb would do it with room for bad cuts.
