That depends. Are you wanting an SCA shield to be used for SCA combat or do you want a historic shield to be used for SCA combat? Tourney shields were smaller. I am 5'9" 200lbs. My shield, which I based off of some 14th century german shields, is ~18"x~23" (i think it is 22.5", b...

I can get in this mental space and stay there. It's not pretending, it's using what I know and computing many, many possible factors that most fighters never consider. Many still think that their swords magically slice through helmets. Most focus only on that type of fantasy. I'm trying to use the ...

There are too many people in the SCA that I barely trust to hit me with Rattan. The idea of letting those people grapple with me sends a cold shiver up my spine. I have to agree with this statement. I am, however, intrigued at the concept of grappling in armour. I think if it were to be something i...

generally use the following when choosing rattan: 1) Always choose sticks in person, never online. 2) I choose based on density, straightness and diameter, more dense, straighter and as close to 1.25" as possible. 3) I look at the flex of the sticks - the less whippy, the better. 4) I never buy...

As to the topic -

Having made most all of my current kit..... maybe 400$ material and 40 hours of time for the hard portion of the kit.

Does that include the soft kit portion? (chausses, gambeson, etc...) if so, about 300$ in materials and another 20 hours of time.

The kit/helm own came over again this afternoon and we worked a bit more on the helm. He chose to go with keeping the crown flush with the top as it is, keeping the 3/8in gap and will have a professional welder fill in the gaps once the work is done.

Could this gap be covered up with the cross, or is it pre drilled in that area and the holes would show? The holes are predrilled and the gapping is at its worst right at the tip of the cross, where the gap would show a bit on either side of the point. The cross covers 99% of it, but that lil bit m...
