I am also 34 (will be 35 in Sept) and I started right after I turned 33. I am getting better consistently (or so I am told.)
Just think of age as a state of mind.... I many be 34 in body, but I am young at heart, I enjoy fighting and will be doing it as long as I am able.

Late (1380-1400) 14th century Latten questions.
How much was it used? What was the prevalent type used? In those types and uses, how "fancy" did the cut of the latten get? - meaning - Did they just go with straight lines that were shaped (roped, etc...) or were there other patterns used (such as cut to an embattled line, etc...) If it was cut to ...

For a more historically accurate solution, from the opinion of one who has been studying the marshallite handbooks for the past several months (just 4 sigs away from being done! YAY), I suggest the following: First the official Society Rule: ***h. All parts of the helm that might come into contact w...

The drawing temp can also affect the level of hardness, brittleness, rigidity, etc... 550 - 650 will yiled you the best temper for SCA combat - 700-800 will yield a harder, less yielding temper. Alaric - You know when you guys are gonna be in the shop tempering anything? I had not heard back from Gr...

1) Line engagement means that you are engaged with ANYONE on that line, not the the 3 or 4 in front of you. If a 12' spear tags your body for 7 guys down on your right, that is engagement and you are dead (if it was a good shot.) ***Remember that thrusts to the SIDE or BACK of the head are not vali...

Regular anealling is a very very handing thing when working with spring steel. the final hardening process takes place after the piece is worked and shaped. You can most definitely use thinner spring than mild or stainless. If this is SCA, you still cannot make a helm of thinner than 16ga due to the...

Personally, I would go a little thinner (4oz) - You will find it plenty durable and lasting, plus it will be lighter and ooler to wear (not that wearing leather is cooling.) In the COPs that I have made, I use either a topgrain or suede (though suede is not historically accurate, clients like the ch...

I do not know how many people out there have used or seen these before. I heard about them through a friend and found a few to use. They are VERY handy! I can only atest for the rules here in the Middle, however, I believe the RoE are "officialy" the same in every kingdom. There are certain levels of "courtesy" that are commonplace in some and not in others, and I do not account for those here. OFFICALLY, however, this is the RoE for melee/war: 1) L...

The piece of rattan I found is actually 1 3/8" almost all the way down the entire length. Due to its length, I left the rattan "skin" on to foster a longer life. I use 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" to make single handed weapons and shave them down some, but I try to leave as much "skin" on a weapon as I can to i...

Pell - I am currently in the process of making a new greatsword. If you like. I will take pictures of the process and can email them to you. To sum it up briefly - 1) Smooth the rattan staff at its "joints" and cut to length (for me, this was exactly my height - 5'10" 2) Shape the handle to fit the ...

Blackening steel....
I know this topic has come up before.... I am looking for the best method for getting an even dark result from carbon steel. Welcome to the Archive! For SCA combat, I would suggest against a full white kit, unless you dont mind heat. Yes the can be gorgeous on the field, but the heat and humidity(especially in the south) can get ya. I will suggest the 14th century a well. The armour fits very well for the type of combat w...

and humidity? Up here in the grand Midlands, I was out yesterday eve practicing and the humidity was reminicent of Florida (90+%) and about 85 degrees.
