Ok,
I think I know the answer to this, but just in case, I will ask.
What type of thread was used for stiching garments together?
Did the thread vary from fabric type to fabric type? (i.e. - Silk fabric used silk thread - Linen fabric used linen thread...)
Thanks!

Sorry for the lack of initial details. A good friend is having to temporarily close up shop due to a number of life circumstances and offered me my choice of pieces at a fair price, given that it will be at least a year efore he can get anything going again (if not longer.) He was also kind enough t...

I find it hard to believe as well. I wore a 12ga slatted kettle w/grille that had a 1/4 bar reinforcing the rim and a full coif that all total weighed 18 lbs - As far as weight. Just using physics and the laws of action/reaction, I personally would never use a helm of less than 8 lbs, unless there w...

I have been fortunate that in the 3 tourneys I have entered, I have not really had a bad one. First one - Double elim - I lost one (to the man who won and later became my knight), I won two, then lost one. This was 3 months after I started fighting. Second one - Gulf Wars - Bear pit - I won 5 lost 2...

All of the martial arts training I have had had taught me to NEVER look an opponent directly in the eyes. Buttons, buttons - Part Deux
Since the previous thread seems to have been dominated by the gambeson button issue, I would like to address my other question here separately. What type of button would be best suited on a lesser noble cotehardie in the late 14th century? Cloth? Wood covered cloth? Metal? If metal, what type - bras...

Just a thought - I do not know if there is conflict, but you can check here -

If you really like the "Vert, a rampant wolf argent" - you could always make it 2 points different by doing "Vert, a rampant wolf argent sinister, a bordure argent.
Just a thought.

Just an FYI Wyrm, if this is for SCA, you may result in a conflict with mine. I am Per Bend Rayonny vert and sable, a rampant wolf or. Yes kass, exactly! hehe.... I dont WANT metal buttons on my gambeson. The thing with cloth buttons - it seems that they would not last long, getting torn off by my CoP just in the movement of fighting. I was hoping for something a little more flat and/or unobrtursive. Logic tells me (at least my log...

Looking for a good (and inexpensive!!) source for a variety of 14th century buttons.
I know cloth and metal were used, but what about other materials? Were wood buttons used? What about leather?
Thank you!

Basinet padding....Channeled or Quilted?
In my efforts to improve the quality of my own kit, the time is coming soon for me to have finished up my basinet. Once done, I will need to pad it. Which would be more accurate for a german style basinet of the late 14th century? Were stuffed channels used or layered and quilted padding used? Thank...
