Re: What do you do to overcome a plateau?
Do something totally off normal. Fight with a different weapon style. Fight off handed. Do it for a couple months. For me, it breaks up the "same-old, same-old" and gives me a perspective on things from a different kind of fight.

Re: Armourer Review -WildArmoury - Hourglass Gauntlets - Upd
UPDATE - After having used them now for 2 1/2 months, I have to say that I am overall very disappointed. At 1 practice a week and 2 events, I have had to repair the stitching 7 times, repair 4 different rips in the finger lame leathers where the rivets tore through and have a crack in the right met...

I have contacted him, but have yet to hear from him.
As to his Grace's comment...I am aware of the cost of the gauntlets, but the promised quality that came with that price has not been met. It is as simple as that.

Re: New guy looking for leatherworking tips
Okay, I'm going to leave this somewhat open-ended, and hopefully get some good info. I have been trial-and-erroring my way through making splinted arms and legs, and I have some questions about working with leather. 1.) Rough edges - there has to be something I can do about the squared off rough le...

Re: Question on hardening/tempering
The weed burner is going to be your cheapest option, me thinks. A kiln is another (or a mini-kiln, in your case). With most steels and steel alloys, you will need to hit 1400+ temperatures for the hardening. You are correct on tempering - a std home oven can hit the temp needed, most often. For SCA ...

Nobody is talking about enforced authenticity. We are talking about enforced minimum appearance standards, within the bounds of reason. Read your sentence again...realize that you're saying "We're not enforcing authenticity, we're just forcing people to look authentic" Then see my point. ...

How hard is that? It is not difficult at all, and is EXACTLY how I approach it at practices, events, etc. Always has been my approach. I am, as I have stated here several times, happy to play my game and let others play theirs. I think the formost issue that has all the feathers ruffled is that som...

Re: St George - Hradcany Square - Body armour - Update!
Here is a drawing of what I think we are talking about. The top edge would have a slight radius to “take the curse off” the top, this will also make the tooling last longer. The scale could also have a slight dome to the tip in profile. http://www.globaleffects.com/Temp/scalesize.jpg Often it is ea...

Re: Not so hidden armor
It can be alot cheaper than that, Kenwrec, if one makes HIDDEN plastic armour. Barrel is free or of negligble price, and all one then needs is a good helm ($130-300ish) and garb to go over it. $18 of linen will cover all but the biggest fighters. You are 100% correct. I was just offering a mostly s...

Re: Not so hidden armor

This does not excuse them from having to meet minimal standards of protection when fighting, why should it excuse them from meeting minimum standards of appearance? If you are unable to meet these standards, do not...

Re: Not so hidden armor
Which brings to the fore another tangent: The Dream. It seems to me that many who rail against where the SCA has come do so because the SCA they joined umpteen (or three) years ago was the SCA with which they fell in love. The SCA today is different, and the most visible, obvious change is material...

Re: What spring steel do I want for armour?
i use 1050. Be careful though sometimes Adrmiral has sent me sheets that were not consistant. One end was dang near mild one was crazy carbon heavy, everything out of that whole sheet was useless. Soft end wouldn't harden, hard end shattered, stuff in the middle warped so bad it was crazy. Reaaaaaa...

Re: Not so hidden armor
It is a great dream that has to be mitigated with reality. Those who look only to the dream will fail. Those who forget that everyone's dream is different will fail as well. The Dream, with its lack of definition, variance from person to person, etc, IMO, is not only one of the best aspects of the ...

Re: What spring steel do I want for armour?
I may be misinformed, but I was of the understanding that 4130 (no, it isn't stainless) is prefered by the do-it-yourself armourers because it is more tolerant in terms of heat treating. In other words, there is a wider temperature window for the heat treating. You can accomplish a serviceable piec...

I agree with Sigismund in one crucial way, which cannot be gainsaid: Material culture is what makes the environment of SCA events. If we don't have medieval material culture, we're a bunch of dorks at a campout. If I want to just talk about medieval brewing, or Italian rapier fencing, or how a doub...

Re: What spring steel do I want for armour?
If you are going into "spring" stainless, I believe that 4130 is the prefered type, though I dont use it myself. I do know that the latter is much more temperature sensitive than the 1050/1065, however (read: have a digital temp gauge if you intend to work with 4130). 4130 is not stainles...

I have seen a number of people clarify that there is a difference between what the SCA says it is and what the SCA really is. This is 100% correct, however, it is the way it is BECAUSE no one is truly enforcing the "reasonable attempt" rule that is very clearly stated on the official SCA w...

Those line would be paint or dye and not ropes. In the last example you gave, note the coloration of the crow's feet guy lines. The line on the canopy are blue.
