I used to have that problem with my bascinet (except my head was in it!

). My solution was to partially line my helm in corkwood to take up the ring. Thanks, Melrakki, for that idea!

The uskuf was a particular hat for the yeniceri, and I've seen them alternately in red & white. Is that what you mean? The individual units are called 'ortas' but I don't know the particular signifiers from one orta to the next.

I think you should expand and subdivide your section on combat, so that you include - armoured combat, archery, rapier, siege, youth, hounds, and WMA. Give the full range of what we're capable of.
