Has it occurred to you to just call the local university, which has to have a Latin professor somewhere, to ask him?

(And it's definitely not "vitae" -- the grammar is all wrong.)

Very cool. (Sleeping on bruised hips -- interesting new experience? ;) )

But I have to be a bit of a wet blanket, because I have to ask....

What is the provenance of that armour? I've never seen anything quite like it.

What your saying (or the way a lot of folks are reading what your saying) is: If people show up in your area and you don't like what they are doing or how they are doing it, you tell them where they can go so that you will be happier with the SCA you want to have. never mind what they may or may no...

No, they didn't. They bounce the use of quartered fields where it gave the impression of marshalling arms.

Japanese armour lacing aid

Okay, we have a new product on the Sengoku Daimyo online shop -- a big ol' color poster showing the different styles of lacing of Japanese armour. If you make Japanese armour, you might want to put one up in your shop. And your bedroom. And living room. Hey, that blank space on the wall above your t...

It won't work. Your bordure is color on color. While a divided field can "violate" the color rule, a bordure is a charge and *cannot* violate the rule. Besides --- a solid gold or silver bordure would go a long way to "unifying" the whole arrangement.

The visor is the *topmost* plate -- everything is under it (except for one helmet style -- etchu-school zunari -- where the top plate overlaps the top of the visor).

What amazes me the most, is not that they'd find a few people willing to take their clothes off (though I'm not sure I'd expose all of my *ahem* soft bits around all that weaponry), but that the organizers allowed them to do it, and there's children in the audience. To be fair, in at least one phot...

Well, considering that the kilt is a development of the great kilt (being all that frou-frou was conssidered unnecessary) and is a very modern garment... People who wear kilts in the SCA annoy the crap out of me. "National costume" does not equal "pre-17th century clothing." A kilt is just about as ...

That's why the Japanese lacquered their stuff. I don't think the Europeans had lacquer. They might have CB'ed it, but then what's the diff about using regular leather?

There are actually several different styles of suits in the terracotta army -- the armour types tend to break down by rank and occupation (e.g., charioteers have a specialized armour that focusses on protecting the arms as they're exposed and held out). You might want to look into getting a rather t...

Effingham likey. If you can get by without a conflict on that lion (rampant lions on solid colors are VERY common historically speaking, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's one with a chief... but it's definitely worth a shot. Things are looser now than they used to be, and it just might get throu...

"Azure semy de lys or, on a chief embattled argent three crosses flory sable." You can call it "six fleurs de lys" (3, 2, and 1 being the default arrangement) but it still won't pass. Essentially, you're differencing the arms of France Ancient -- Azure semy de lys or. That would never fly. If you ma...

For what it is worth, I am with Effingham. The party per chevron works well, as opposed to the small per point pointy(?). Point pointed. That wouldn't work, as a point pointed is a variation on a base, which is a charge. Meaning, of course, that it sits on the field, and so is subject to the color-...

You're moving away from good design. You're adding too many elements and too many colors. BTW, if you MUST stick something on top, it has to be either gold or silver: you can't put a color on a color. A divided field is allowed, as the colors are deemed to be butting against each other rather than o...

Not really - as typically drawn, trees don't really "face" in a certain direction, as opposed to animals/beasts or some other kinds of charges. True, but the point is, the balance is secondary to the depiction/orientation of the charges. The default is that they face dexter -- that is, FORWARD as t...

It probably won't bounce just because of that. Effingham may be right about period style, but I like the symmetry better - unless perhaps you switch the placement: what about two trees in chief, and one dolphin on the purple field? Remember: the medieval concept of symmetry and balance is not the s...

Good period heraldic style would have the dolphins facing the same direction. That would be two charges (dolphin hauriant and a tree). Otherwise, it's THREE charges (dolphin hauriant, dolphin hauriant contorny, and a tree). Plus, economy of colors would be better style (and easier for you to reprodu...
